What are the top 2 makers of GPS units, for car and mobile?
I'm looking into purchasing one for my charger that can also be used while riding horse back. not looking too spend a fortune, might buy used if I can find a good deal battery life is most important.. |

Garmin is the biggest (and arguably best) maker. TomTom & Magellan probably take 2nd/3rd and fight over it...tho they seem to differ in that TomTom is geared mainly towards street and Magellan sells more offroad/tracking GPS than they do street models. Garmin has the advantage of better units, better maps, but IMHO TomTom's have a slicker interface, are cheaper for what you get and you can load all kinds of cool apps on their stuff. My 720 will play videos, read Garmin tracks, get real-time weather etc. For 1/2 of what my Nuvi 660 cost, it does a lot more. TomTom's maps are not as good as Garmins, tho. I have no experience with Magellan's, so I can't comment on their wares. |

Best buy had garmins cheaper than sam's club a week ago. I got a 1300 something or other for 250. But canada map is 60. And you have to buy a cable.
Garmin etrx I have is nearly usless anywhere but on a highway or football field. The 60 whatever hooked up fast but broke after a month. Save the receipt or they willl want 150 to fix it. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

Garmin Legend user hear.
Mine is about 4-5 years old, but that thing is worth it's fucking weight in gold when I'm hunting. It cost around $250 when I bought it, which today $250 could get you a hell of a lot more of a GPS unit obviously. That thing has saved my ass countless times, and I will stay faithful to the brand. |
| Had both Garmin and Tom Tom. Tom Tom is MUCH easier to use. No guessing on road names. With the Garmin certain roads had to be spelled exactly. It was always a guessing game...like does it want it entered as"County Road" or "CR?" Some were "CR" some were "County Road" some were just "C". Tom Tom will bring up a list of possibles and narrows it down as you enter more letters. Love the Tom Tom. |

While garmin and tomtom are probably the two most known, these two stocks took a pounding today. The announcement of google turn by turn being included in the next version of Android (v2.0) is going to make a whole lot of upcoming cell phones very competitive. If you are in the market for a new cell phone in the coming months, this may be something to keep in mind.

For the handheld mobile unit, I have and use a garmin etrex legend that is old, but still works well. I am sure that the newer versions have a better GPS unit in it and will lock location quicker. |

Which of the garmins would be best suited for outdoors, I plan too use it while trail riding.. Thanks Probably none mentioned in this thread. Nobody bothered to read your post or care. It will be sweet having turn by turn directions on your horse though! It's got a 12v plug too right? I'm fond of my Lowrance Expedition C. It lives in a RAM mount in my pickup but is equally at home in that same RAM mount on my ATV or in my pocket out in the woods. Two AA batteries will run it 16hrs. |
