| I travel quite a lot and stay at motels off the beaten path at times. All seem to have wireless internet access now. Where are they getting it from instead of having to use dial-up? |

What they do is the hotel/motel generally subscribes to a single cable or DSL internet connection from a local company. Then in their office (or some central point), they plug in a wireless router to their internet connection. Then people that are within ~100-300 feet with a laptop with wireless capability can connect to the internet. Some of the higher end hotels will set up some fancy security on their internet connection to try to prevent non-tenents from logging on. |

Depending on the hotel company and size of the hotel, they will either have a DSL/Cable modem or they will get something like a T1 or T3. Then all they do is put wireless access points throughout the hotel that will give you your wireless hookup. A lot of hotels will advertise that they have "free wireless", but they don't tell you that it is only in their lobby or bar area. -d |
