Took my Polish Tantal build to a gunsmith.

Dropped it off 2 months ago for what he said should be 2 weeks.
Never calls me back, I have spoken to him several times. Most of his excuses were "receiver's on the way", "havent received the receiver" , "receiver should be in any day".

Last week I left him a message that I would be picking my gun up this week regardless of where he is at in the process.
Never called me back so I called him a few minutes ago.

Said its built but he has not park'd it. Says he will "try" to get it done before he leaves on vacation Wednesday. He has another gun he is finishing and wants to wait on parking mine for when that one gets completed. (even though a couple weeks ago he said he would do mine even if he doesn't have another one to do).

I let him know we are past the"try"stage. Said he has 4 kids, stuff comes up and he wont commit to getting it done in a day.
Told him that we are 2 months into a 2 week deal. Explained I need my gun back and to call me Tuesday and let me know where he is on it. I let him know I would be picking it up either way.

Said he just got the receiver "2 to 3 weeks" ago (well uhm sounds like plenty of time to me [://)

QUESTION: How important is parkerizing the gun?

QUESTION: Why have the last 2 supposed gun smiths in my area fucked me over? Last guy supposedly fixed my other Polish Tantal that was failing to extract the spent casing. Should have known by some of the guys comments he had no clue about semi auto's.

QUESTION: Would you leave the gun with him to finish the process or ask for a partial refund and get your gun?

QUESTION: How important is parkerizing the gun? That depends.  How much do you like rust?

Should have know by some of the guys comments he had no clue about semi auto's. Because you're going to hobbyists and not gunsmiths.  Are you going to the cheapest ones and working your way up the list?

First guy who was fixing one for me has a nice shop by where I live refered me to the other guy to build up one. I dont consider the 280.00 I paid the guy to build it up cheap but again I didnt shop around so not sure about that.

I think I may just do that

Things you should know when dealing with a gunsmith:

1- All estimates of time should be increased by a factor of 10.

My last two trips to major, nationally known gunsmith shops have left me fucked in the ass with a hot poker.

I don't know what to tell you other than it is a dying profession that is rife with crooks, swindlers, and hacks.

Get it while you can.

I would not pay full price either.

3 sides to the story and all that... but...  Fuck businesses that don't keep commitments.

I have never dealt with Gun smiths before these last 2 experiences. Obviously they have not been goods ones so far.

So are you saying I should let him finish up and judge him on his work vs the time frame?

My longest wait is 2 years while I had a Winchester 94 worked on.  I think my BHP was about that long.

From some of the posts it seems the Gun smithing business has some issues as a whole.....

I already paid cash up front but if I do go pick it up I will expect a partial refund. As we all know expecting and getting can be worlds apart.

In hindsight people working on something they have already been paid for doesn't seem to be motivational to get it done.

RK Gun Smithing in Nampa is where I took my Tantal to get it fixed. He called me and said "its done" I asked him how many rounds he test fired, he said 3 or 4 .

I told him to go through 2 mags and call me back. Called back 2 days later and said it ran clean with no issues. Took it out and 10 rounds later a casing gets stuck.
Its clear he never took it back out to actually test it.

Tiffany Enterprise in Nampa is where I took the Tantal kit to be built.
No follow up and time frame way off. Not sure about his actual work yet, he may be good at what he does just a lousy planner with to much going on. (we will find out soon enough).
