Just some detail questions about the generic makeup of a stack / snake for a chapter in a book

1.  Is it stack or snake?

2.  What is each position called?

3.  Is there a 'door breacher' guy?
a. Is that what he's called?
b. Is he part of the stack/snake?
c. Once breached does he join the stack/snake?
d. Where would he join in?
e. When using a long gun, vs a ram, for a breach is it always a shotgun? (not sure how it could be any other long gun )

4.  Is everyone trained to do everything?  Does the "fastest shotgunner" become the breacher by default?  Or does he become 'the usual' breacher?

Thanks.

Why are you asking?

I'm not on SWAT, but I'll answer the best I can.

1.  Is it stack or snake? We call it a stack

2.  What is each position called?First man is point, the guy breaching the door is the breacher, everyone else is just numbered I believe

3.  Is there a 'door breacher' guy?If needed, yes
a. Is that what he's called? Just "breacher" here
b. Is he part of the stack/snake?Yes
c. Once breached does he join the stack/snake?  Yes
d. Where would he join in? Depends but usually the back
e. When using a long gun is it always a shotgun? No, in fact it usually is not here

Thanks.

Current/certified SWAT guy

1.  Is it stack or snake? Stack, but nomenclature really doesn't matter.

2.  What is each position called? Usually, no one is assigned a specific job, as positions can change during movement/officer down/other contingencies. But a breacher is usually assigned during rehearsal/briefing.

3.  Is there a 'door breacher' guy? Yes.

a. Is that what he's called? Breacher, yes.

b. Is he part of the stack/snake? Yes, but since he has tools in his hands, another officer covers him upon approach. Usually 3rd man in stack, rolls out, takes position upon reaching door, readys his tools; breaches upon command.

c. Once breached does he join the stack/snake?  Yes, sometimes 3rd man on entry; but fills in where needed then looks for work.

d. Where would he join in? See above.

e. When using a long gun is it always a shotgun? Situation dependant/Mission specific.
Thanks.

Ditto.  The only shotguns we use are breaching shotguns.  Long guns are a mix of M4's, AR15's, and MP5s.  We are a multi agency team.

Yep, all of this. There is usually a knock/announce guy and a team leader. May be other designated jobs depending on the situation. Stack is usually the name, snake is a style/method.

Unfortunately there is no official 'standard' but for a lot of places I'm sure things are similar.

1.Stack.
2.Point man/ Shield man is 1, everyone else follows suit. You don't stay in that order once entry is made but you are the same 'number'.
3. Yes.
A. he's called a breacher,
B he's last man in.
C. Last man in. Ours carries the RAM inside and sets it down incase an indoor door needs to be breached. It can be retrieved without exiting the building. He starts clearing rooms with the team though without it.
D. See above.
E. We typically only use a shotgun for certain calls. We stagger handguns and ARs otherwise.

Generally everyone is trained as an entry team member and has at least some training on the specialty jobs (everyone will know how to breach, use a shotgun/SMG/carbine, deploy chemical agents and diversionary devices, use the other tools, etc). However, there are usually particular members who have further training and/or proficiency at a particular role who will be the primary option for doing those jobs when needed. Grenadiers, medics and snipers usually have a good bit of extra training, some other jobs may as well (especially if the team has something like explosive breaching capability, a robot or specialized vehicle).

Not SWAT, just a mil guy that hangs out here because I'm also an EMT and do some contract security stuff and am looking at getting into LE. But I'm just a junior enlisted low speed nasty girl medic hopefully not too far out of my lane.

Mil way that I've seen carried over into civ world.

1. Stack. Never heard it called a snake before.

2. Number 1 guy, number 2 guy, etc. or just 1, 2, 3, etc.

3. Mil mostly trains using 4 man stacks but the last guy in the stack breaches.
A. Door man, door guy, breacher, breach man, last man, etc.
B. Already answered. Last in stack until he gets the tap to move up.
C/D. Yes, as the last man in.
E.  When shotgun is used, it is almost always a secondary weapon due to being stoked with breaching rounds. Unless we are rolling ghetto retard with buck because we couldn't get door rounds

4. Everyone learns what to do according to what number you are in the stack. But obviously special jobs like medic or something not everyone knows. If doors are getting kicked usually we pick the biggest ape

I won't comment on who chicks the pyro and more LE specific stuff though. Everyone does it a little different too.
