So grandma got me "The Smithsonian' s The Definitive Visual History of World War One."
Flip through and come to a page of small arms. Noice, right? Well, what they have listed as a "Mosin Nagant M1891" has all metal a deep black. Like brand new bluing, or maybe black paint. Receiver, bolt handle, everything. I've got a 91/30 in my collection, and I've seen loads of mosins here. Did the Russians park/paint these things completely back then? (The stock doesn't appear to be laminated, either, for what that's worth.) |

Well, shit, if I wanted to do that, I wouldn't have posted here. |

Laminated is post ww2 stocks . A 91 has some slight differences . All of mine are blued , Thanks. I really never paid much attention to the stocks, as I never planned on any in depth mosin collecting. But I figured that was normal. That bluing just through me off. |

M91s were blued from the factory. Bolts AFAIK have always been left in the white. I have only seen blued bolts here and there. Seems like at least one refurb facility was doing it, since these were sold straight from the importer, TGI, and not bubba's gun shop.
The refurb 91/30s you see on the market today have a darker almost black blue finish because they were completely dipped during the refurb process. Original blue was much more bluish than black. |

Thanks everyone. Here's a quick pic: http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g213/rbwater/mosin_zps57944250.jpg Quoted:

Should have a step style rear sight - that one appears to be a slide (like 91/30)... It still retains the blade front sight - and the screw tighten bands - (correct for a m91) but something looks funny. Might be just a crappy picture though in reference to the rear sight. The blued bolt is odd... looks refinished all over to me. Quoted:
A WWI Mosin would most likely not have an upper hand guard, have a sling swivel at the front of the mag housing, and be blued or worn. Bolt in the white. Sounds like they have a poor example. Huh?

... I never planned on any in depth mosin collecting... You should check it out - I'm addicted and have been for years. I find all the small differences, stamps, etc. interesting.
The M91 is my favorite - but I try to concentrate on Finnish captures and reworks.
