Hey guys,

My dad wants to buy additional 9x19 Parabellum ammo for his Glock 19. I was wondering what brands you guys like for that caliber and why.

EDIT: He'll use his Glock for home defense and taking it to the range.

Thanks.

what's the ammo for?

for plinking, i've used a lot of winchester white box 115 grain.  lately i've been buying monarch(barnaul and prvi partison) as it's cheaper.  ETA: i see you're in texas, so you'd be able to buy monarch at any academy store.

for defense, i have speer gold dot 124 and 147 grain on hand.  locally, i buy defensive ammo at sportsmans warehouse.  they have an excellent selection.

WWB 100 packs from Walmart for plinking (price has gone up lately I think).

For defense, I buy +P Golden Sabre Bonded 127 gr from cheaperthandirt.com for about $15/box.

Wow that's a variety of choices there.

Any reason why you chose your brands?

Also, what sort of jacketing would be best suited for home defense? EDIT: All 9mm Lugers are JHP's right?

Sorry but I'm fairly noobish.

I'm shooting WWB value packs from Wal-Mart.  When that runs out I'm on to reloads.

Any quality hollow point ammo from a reputable ammo maker, ie. Remington, Federal,CCI, Winchester, CorBon etc.  They all fill the home protection need. You can get into specifics but why. Any of them will do the job.

Winchester White Box is definitely good plinking ammo.

As far as defensive ammo goes, you need to get a hollowpoint round that’s been specifically designed for self defense. The 9mm cartridge isn’t bad if you have good ammo. But you really shouldn’t go with second rate defensive ammo when you have a 9mm.

Speer Gold Dot ammo has a good reputation (124gr +P or 147gr) in 9mm but there are definitely other good choice out there.

Here’s a link that’ll answer most of your questions.

as am i.  the only way to learn is to ask.

i'm almost embarrassed to say that my defensive ammo choice is based almost solely off of what i read here on arfcom.  the ammo FAQ posted above is a great resource.  if i wasn't using speer, winchester ranger would be my next choice...  once again, based off of the posts and pictures i've seen here.

for plinking ammo, i go with whatever's cheapest.  i currently get WWB at $6.96/50 and monarch for $4.86/50(steel cased) and $5.86/50(brass cased).  when it comes to plinking and blasting ammo, i could care less about the minor differences between loads.  as long as it goes boom every time and doesn't make me go broke, i'm happy.

ETA:  9mm luger just refers to 9x19...  it's kind of like calling 7.62x51 ".308 winchester".  you'll find both JHP and FMJ 9mm luger.

WWB from Wally World for plinking.

147 Gr. Remington Golden Saber for carry.

Whatever he decides to use for carry, make sure he buys a few boxes and verify they work flawlessly in the pistol.  Most pistol will eat ball ammo all day, but many are picky about certain types of hollow points.
