I have tried looking on the Internet and I have not found a clear answer to this question: Are ASP batons spring loaded (ie, if you press the button to deploy them, they expand by themselves without force from you) or do they require you to forcibly expand them (such as by flicking your wrist)?

I know that it could vary by model as well.

Thanks.

They expand with a flick of the wrist.

Yup, and sometimes they can even stick a little, making it kind of hard to deploy.

Are there any batons that expand with a button? I've never seen that, though it'd be kind of cool if it worked well.

Thanks for the answers.

I am not aware of any batons that expand with a button.  In Virginia, it is illegal to carry any spring sticks which is "a spring loaded metal stick activiated by pushing a button which rapidly and forcefully telescopes the weapon to several times its original length," which is the reason I was wondering how ASP's deployed.

A typical ASP baton relies on gravity and a downward or outward throw of the wrist / hand.  The baton is held closed by a piece of metal under the butt cap, shaped similar to that of a triangle.  I believe that piece of metal is categorized as a spring.  However, the 'spring' doesn't assist in the baton's deployment.  It's job to help keep the sections collapsed.
