Is Austria generally 'pro-American'? Does their government support us? How about the people in general? Do they have anti-American rallies or anything like that? |

We like you guys. Mostly. There is the typical European propensity for wimpiness when it comes to things like international affairs and the concept that the U.S. is quick to pull the trigger. There is also a very strong socially liberal bent that can run against American sentiment. But that's most of the continent. |
Living in Bad Tölz (Oberbayern) I always found Österreich to be like Bavaria, only not so anal. And Bavaria is laid back compared to the rest of Germany. We used to I enjoyed Wien. Kaffee mit Schlag, Sachertorte... Sundays we used to take the 13 south from Tölz through Lenggries past the Slyvensteinsee into Österreich to the Achensee and have Kaffee. |
Frankenwald was my old haunt. If you think Sud Deutchland is laid back, spend some time in Schleschwig/Holstein. Those cow farmers are much more relaxed than the sheep-herders down in the mountainous south. The thing I miss most about Austria is the history. What the Romans did/caused there is phenomenal. |
During CWT/WET in 2006, we went to the Brauneck and snowshoed out to the memorial and laid flowers. We also visited the memorial on the Starnbergersee. Finally, we visited old Herr Demmel. You must be OLD to be a Tölzer! ![]() OP: I have always found Austria to be quite gemütlich and freundlich. They seem to be more laid-back and family-friendly than the Germans. Granted, most of my experience is in Tirol, but I also did New Year's Eve (Sylvester) in Wien one year . . . OMG that was a fracking blast!!

Ha! Jugend! I habe mehr zeit in eine T-10 da Sie in eine T-Shirt haben! Ich war in SF, als Sie Scheißengelb in Ihren Windeln waren. As those are US military idioms, the translations are awkward. I got trick-fucked into commanding the color guard for the presentation of the new Fahne for the Kameradverbindung Gaißach in 1989... I learned Rot scheint die Sonne from Major Rolle at the Luftlanden-und-Lufttransportschule Altenstadt when I earned my Bundeswehrfallschrimabziechen (and mine are bullion embroidered not that metal badge). I've taken a 'ski day' on the Braunneck. I was at Flint Kaserne (Bad Tölz) 1987-1990. Great place. Good times. |
