Boss had a baby. Got them a 2013 1 oz silver eagle as a gift from a bullion store. Said spot + $4.00 for cost. Was $28.00 no tax.

Never bought p.m. before. Is this a fair price or expensive for the eagle?

How does it work if i just want to buy a plain 1oz bar?

For a single ASE at a local dealer $4 over is fine right now. Premiums are up a few dollars from last year and on a single coin that is about the standard.

I worked at a coin shop until a few months ago and we were selling at $3.25-$4 over for about the last 8 months

Fair for retail for just one coin.
I'm sure that would have come down for a whole tube or a larger quantity.

Is buying mail-order silver safe? Or even gold for that matter?

Wouldn't every fucking package deliverer under the sun steal it?

From the big reputable bullion houses like APMEX, Kitco, ect it is very safe. People get screwed when they try and fins killer "deals" and end up with fake shit.

It is mailed very discreetly.  Working at a coin and bullion shop we sent millions through USPS mail. A medium flat rate box can hold around $30,000 of 90% coin silver.... Used to send those out weekly. Very spensive stuff went registered mail and we carried our own insurance through loyds for $1.5 million max per box.

Nothing ever got stolen with well over 3,000 packages I sent while I worked there. We send some pretty crazy stuff through the mail. Though for very high value single items like coins over $500k alone we usually got a plane ticket and hand delivered it to the buyer at the airport.

People do it all the time but unless you're buying large quantities the shipping and insurance adds up.

Other than a couple of EE purchases from private individuals here, I always buy across the counter from a couple of local dealers.
Cash in, cash out, no paperwork, no record. That's the way I prefer it.

ASE's usually get bought back at around $1.25-$1.50 over spot.

They are one of the few products that are not reportable to the IRS along with American gold eagles and buffaloes and a few world silver and gold coins.

Only way you get reported buying ASE's is paying more than $10k in cash or structuring to get around the $10k limit.

Reportable silver starts at 1000oz and gold depends on coins or bars.. Think its 36 oz in coins or 25oz in bars for gold triggers reporting if not a exempt product.
