I have a cheap RCA surround system that came free when I got my 50" HDTV however it will only "surround sound" if a DVD,CD is playing. how or what must be done to make it surround on regular TV.?
a friend of mine has a Sony system that will surround on anything. all my wires are correctly color coded, channels all set but will only play the right speaker and subwoofer during normal programming. |

CD's are created to be played in stereo mode.

I'm assuming the DVD player is built into the system and not an external DVD player. Correct?

What is your TV source? Cable, satellite, antenna? How is the TV connected to the audio system? If cable, do you use an external cable box? Finally, what is your programming package? Full, digital surround sound is not always available except on some movie channels and the HD channels.

Well nevermind your answers pretty much summed it up. and now I feel embarrassed but educated . I just thought there was a way I could make all 6 speakers play at the same time regardless.
I have direct tv, the dvd is built into the system, and by all "channels set" I mean correctly wired to what the little letters on the back of the unit describe as "channels" Thank you for taking your time to break it down for me so that I can see why some modes work and what I want doesn't.
