Student Carrying Fake Rifle Prompts Calif. Univ. Lockdown

Lt. Oceal Victory of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department says someone mistook an ROTC student practicing with a fake rifle Thursday morning as an armed gunman. The report prompted the school to shut down the sprawling university grounds 20 miles south of downtown Los Angeles. Authorities swarmed the campus searching for the gunman.

February 22, 2008 CARSON – A report of a man armed with an assault weapon prompted police to shut down the California State University Dominguez Hills campus yesterday morning before they learned that the person was an ROTC student carrying a fake rifle. Police swarmed the sprawling campus 20 miles south of downtown Los Angeles shortly after 8 a.m. Some students and faculty fled and others locked themselves in buildings. Although ROTC policy is to put training rifles in duffel bags when not in use, the student walked back from practice carrying his rifle. Come on, even when I was in JROTC we had real M-1 grands, and we never had SWAT called on us. Same here. We used real 1903's for drill practice back in the mid-80's. Thirty cadets drilled IN FRONT OF THE SCHOOL, all armed with rifles. No one said Boo. No kidding, we had both active Garands and 1903s. We were even allowed to take de-milled rifles home to practice and had four others on my school bus with rifles almost every day. If we were late for school and couldn't check them back into the armory in the morning we'd just carry them in class all day since they didn't fit in our lockers. Never had a ZOMFG LOCKDOWN

| This actually happens at my school a few times a year. They never shut down campus but as of this semester, at all of our training we have a police escort so we dont scare the local sheep. Last year cops actually drew down on one of our cadets. You would think with 100 guys in ACUs would be kind of obvious as to what we are doing but...... |

ROTC openly drills on the USF campus, in uniform with what I presume to be deactivated M16A2s. They had a scare a few months back when one of the cadets carried his drill 1903 from one building back to another coming back from an exercise, but he'd put on civvies and someone freaked out. No lockdown, but the cops were called on it.

| Those probably aren't demilled M16A2's, but "rubber ducks", rubber training rifles with real barrels. They take a shot out barrel and front sight assembly and put it in a mold to produce a rubber rifle. They usually have sling swivels on them as well. We had those and some demilled M1903's when I was in Army ROTC, in Junior ROTC we had demilled '03's and rubber M1911A1's (for the Color Guard commander). |

we drilled with '03's and had an indoor range where we shot .22's. They switched to pellet rifles after I left. I waonder if they still have the range? My father and brother both went to the same high school and were both in Army JROTC. Dad drilled with and qualified with M1 Garands in the basement firing range. Brother graduated in 1990, they were only allowed to use .22's. With the modern culture of "zero tolerance," I wonder how nuetered JROTC is. I would have been in JROTC, but chose to go to a different high school with world studies and advanced programs geared more to my interests. I think the worst thing for m years was to wear a hat or have headphones. I graduated in 1994. School shootings are a serious and completely insane thing, but come on. Especially if you see a group of people in uniform on the football field or in a parking lot. They are not the whack jobs or terrorists. As to an earlier poster, I didn't use the "wayback machine," I just came across this article on page 2 of "local news," where it didn't belong, on my local Fox stations website.
