I have a Cobray ESD 7400 - 9 Band® Extra-Sensory Radar/Laser Detector.



It has worked well for me and saved me countless times.
The other night I took a shortcut around a small town and was popped by a local for going 46 in a 35.  My detector never went off and I had a clear straight shot at this guy for awhile.  I didn’t doubt him as I was going 46-47.

By the time the guy came up to my window I had all my paperwork for him.  He was polite, I was polite and he said do you know why I stopped you?  I said because I was going over the posted speed limit.  He said yes Sir, I clocked you doing 46 and the speed limit is 35.

He came back in about 2 minutes and gave me my stuff back and said I am giving you a verbal warning to slow down, have a nice night.

I had just been on the interstate running at a good clip and all systems were a go with the detector.  What kind of system do you think he clocked me with?  It must be time for an upgraded radar detector.  Maybe it was some type of Jedi mind trick, I don’t know.

Before someone lectures me about slowing down, I have a heavy foot and always have.  I don’t try to get out of tickets, I know I speed and there will be times I get caught.  The ticket is just the price I have to pay if I want to speed.

Laser or instant on.   Your detector must be getting slow to react or it just didn't pick it up.

this., unless ur detector has a receiver mounted in the front bumper where the plate would go, it will be too late.

Paul, it was around 11:30 p.m. and I came up behind him.  We dont have plates on the front in OK.  I was already curious about the car on the side of the road so I started slowing down as I got closer.
Trust me, I was way over 46 before I started slowing.  By the time I passed him though I was at speed limit but while I was still behind him and slowing down I was around 46-47.
Maybe the detector has lived a good useful life and its time for a new one.

did you go past a overpass or entry ramp that another car could have been parked clocking people?

He could have clocked you with timed interval.  Known distance between two objects/time of travel=speed.

No detector for that.

This. I don't, but I've seen some officers will have their radar off until someone comes into view and turn it on to check speed and turn it off.
Did he specifically say he got you on Lidar or Radar? or just clocked you? If you came up behind him, he probably had a rear antenna for radar.

No other cars around.  It was late and on a country road with no lights.

This is a rural road that just so happens to be inside the town limits of this little country town.  There's nothing around except trees along the road.
The question isnt why so fast?  It should be why is the road marked 35?

Definately sounds like laser and he didn't hit your radar detector, so it didn't light up.

He just said he clocked me doing 46.  
I have no issue with being stopped.  I was speeding and would have readily taken the ticket if he had chose to write one.
They dont have enough leo's to keep but maybe two on at night.  There were no other cars around on this back road.  I saw his rear light reflect off my headlights from a long ways away.  I kept watching my detector and had the sound turned all the way up but nothing happened.  As I got closer I let off the gas and started coasting, I coasted at 46-47 for awhile on this flat road then applied a little brake.  As I got closer I saw the Leo markings and thought I skated out of another ticket since I had decreased to 35.  
As I went past he turned on his lights and I pulled me over.

This.   I've always had Escort Passports.   Only been ticketed twice in my driving career.  

One was a local cop running laser.   The other was instant-on.   I never even heard a laser warning, and by the time I reacted the instant on, I was too late.

I've learned to not speed when you are the only car on the road.  Instant on will get you there.     Much easier to speed in heavier traffic and get plenty of warning prior to being targeted by radar.

Get an Escort Passport 8500 or the newer 9500.  Expensive, but worth it.  It won't save you every time, but they work very well.  I have had a couple, used them for years and they have more than paid for themselves.

I get that the OP is wondering how his rig failed him.  That's how we learn, right?  Whether you agree with his approach to driving or not, it's reasonable for him to ask how it could be that it didn't work.

There are quite a few ways it could have failed and some of them simply can't be gotten around at least not without some serious effort.

-Laser from behind is one.

-Time/distance between two fixed markers/objects is another.  The observing location could be another car, a standing cop, or aircraft, for example.

-Officer estimated speed (yes, this is legal and does get used)

-Instant on with a short pulse (I don't know if this is reality but I don't see why it couldn't be)


That said, if you push to make time then you're pretty likely to get burned.  It doesn't really matter whether anyone else was at risk.  That's how it is.

I have seen units that didn't pick up my radar. The one brand GD loves was the culprit. The guy couldn't believe that the detector wouldn't go off. He received his ticket (he was 50 over and I gave him a break) and then showed him that his detector wasn't working.

Your headlights will work as well. Lots of stuff on the front of the car will reflect a lidar signal.

Was he parallel or perpendicular to you? Parallel suggests a instant on radar (front or rear) and perpendicular suggests lidar (or instant on radar handheld).

Either way, I would suggest getting a Valentine 1. Its lidar detector works well in my experience. It also has instant on warnings.

You can turn some of the bands off with the V1, which is what I assume you are talking about. Maybe he had done that without knowing.

Oklahoma likes to do this with aircraft.      I-35 has white squares painted every half mile just for this purpose.

$10 no sh$t...I tried to sell my $250 detector here for $75obo and had no takers in the month or so I had it listed! As for the op, I would lean either in the "You need a new detector", or "There was a spot car" direction...
