Not realizing what I did, I left my laptop in a box outside...and it rained all day today.    Can I salvage anything?  Can I retrieve anything off of the hard drive?

Let it dry out, completely.  You might be surprised.

Let it dry completely before turning it on. Take out the battery, dry all the contacts. Compressed air will help you speed things up.

It could turn on and be 100%, or it could be FUBAR'd. No way to know until you check it out.

If the rain didn't cause any smoke leaks, it should be fine.

Where exactly is the hard drive on a Dell laptop?  Laptop no worky now.  It tries to boot up, but after about 15 seconds it makes a sound like it is shorting out.  Should I even try to take it to Geek Squad to see if they can recover the files from "My Documents"?

The HD is probably on the bottom, protected by a panel held in by screws.

Geek Squad is the pits.  Find someone you know personally and trust to do a data recovery operation.  Copy the contents of your HD to a safe location, then work on the laptop to see if it can be resurrected.
