Don MacLean and American Pie may well be the worst song I have ever heard.

Every time I hear Janis Joplin sing I wish I was dead.

Neither of the specific examples you provided are big favorites of mine, but neither are anywhere near as bad as you seem to think.

Lots of bands don't have more than 2 or 3 good songs in their entire repertoire.

Modern "heavy metal" is formulaic garbage.

The older you get the more you appreciate actual musicians that actually play actual instruments well.

Very little good was written between 1900 and 1990. Dick Dale? Sucked. Beach Boys? Sucked. The Beatles? Sucked. Led Zeppelin? Sucked. Lynyrd Skynyrd? Sucked except for Freebird. The entirety of Disco? Sucked.

Popular music peaked 20 years ago.

I like George Winston.

Van Halen with Sammy Hagar sucked. DLR or bust.

Rock died about 15 years ago.

Dusty Springfield kicks ass over Janis Joplin.

Metal, death, thrasher, speed or whatever it's called now is just as bad as gangsta rap.

In the late 60s/early 70s Tom Jones was just as good in live performance as Elvis.

"Yacht Rock"

Every year rap gets less and less musical, and focuses more and more on people standing at a mike and spewing ghetto nonsense.  In another decade there won't even be any beat, it will just be a guy standing at a mike screaming the N-word at the top of his lungs.

Every year "pop" starlettes get younger and younger.  In a few years MTV will be able to do crossover specials with Dateline's "To Catch a Predator."

They are very overated.

Jimi was an excellent guitarist. One of the best to be sure. How many people can improvise the way he did? I don't give a shit how fast someone can play guitar, and I'm tired of people thinking good guitarists are ones that can shred faster than the other guy. It takes skill to shred, don't get me wrong, but I think someone who can improvise well, is better.

Also, I dislike it when guitarists write their "solos" Weren't solos originally to show off your improvisational skills?

Their music, imo, is slightly overrated in todays society.

But the "Beatles" themselves as a band, the revolution they started in America/the world and the long-lasting impacts of their success, are not.

1900? you started at 1960.

B. B. King is good, Django Reinhardt, The Eagles, Muddy Waters, James Brown, Pink Floyd. all excellent in both aural pleasantness and technical ability. and look at that, all before 1990.

That's tough. I love both Blues and Psychedelic.

I think on purely on ability to play, I would go with SRV; but on ability to entertain a crowd, and use of odd items for music, I would go with Jimi.

ETA: Overall, if there was a SRV concert and a Jimi Hendrix concert at the same time on opposite ends of the city, I would go watch Jimi.

Yes, indeed. Alphabetically, just from what I have, thoroughly excellent bands that started 1990 or later:

Amon Amarth, Arcade Fire, Between the Buried and Me, Bush, Death Cab for Cutie, Editors, Electric Six, Explosions in the Sky, Interpol, Iron and Wine, Isis, Justice, the Killers, Killswitch Engage, Lamb of God, Modest Mouse, Mogwai, OK Go, Opeth, Rammstein, Shadows Fall, Sigur Ros, Sufjan Stevens, and Swallow the Sun.
