For the love of God, how in the hell do you prevent razor burn?  I hate shaving more than anything in this world.  I've tried different electric and mach 3 type razors, I've tried shaving in the shower and after a shower....

Change the time of day that you shave.

If you shave at night, switch to the morning.  And vice-versa.

And try different shave creams/gels.

Used cold water to shave with, not warm, but no shit cold water, it's uncomfortable, but you'll get used to it, it does prevent razor burn.  Trick we learned in Boot Camp.

Don't use any of that crap shaving gel/cream.

Use hair conditioner and a decent disposable razor.

Oh man, I feel your pain.  I haven't shaved in years (in part to razor burn) but due to a recent job change I've had to start again.  I've been trying various (and rather expensive) shave creams by Neutragenia (Sp?) and others.  Also using some aimed at bikini areas with some good luck.

FWIW, I'm 53 and have suffered this since I started shaving.  If you have dark hair and some free cash, I'd suggest the laser thing.

See my post above (I'm 53).  I suffer like a big dog having to shave again.  Neck looks like I have some kind of disease and burns like a bitch now that summer is here.

I've heard that the "olde-time" shaving lather in a mug applied with a brush stuff helps, like the kind you'd get at a real barber shop.  ZI've always wanted to try some but I don't know where to get some.

Any ideas where this can be purchased?

You're pushing too hard with the razor. A good razor doesn't need to be jammed against your face like you're scraping paint off a barn.

I've thought about getting laser hair removal, but leaving a goatee.....um, wonder how much that would cost!

Don't press too hard and don't go over the same area a bunch. Use you free hand to tighten up your skin when shaving around your chin/neck to help get those hard spots in as few as passes as possible.

I've got a pretty thick beard & somewhat sensitive skin, but this works for me: First I use an electric razor to bring me back to a 5 o'clock shadow. Then I use hot water and a cheap disposable razor to clean up the stubble. Done.

I've got a troubled beard growing at odd angles and get razorburn and ingrown hairs quite commonly...esepcially on my neck.  I did two things to solve my problem.

Use a fresh razor every day (I buy the cheapest disposable razors I can in bulk) and shave every day (I hate it, but it's a must).

Always using a new razor probably increased my costs a bits, but I can't imagine I'm paying more for a bag of 24 disposables than I would be if I way paying to use and replace those 5 bladed ultra-razors every once in a while.  The twin-blade blue plastic jobs do a fine job if I use a new one every day.

I'm sure I could do even better with a straight bade but I don't really have to inclination to learn atm.

edit: Obvious, but who knows if you're screwing up.  Always with the grain.  Always in or after a shower.  Always use aftershave.

I just bought a new panasonic razor, vortex or something like that was the model name.

I have the same problem. I've been doing fine with mach3s or fusion blades but they pretty much stop working for me after two shaves, which gets expensive.

So I went looking for an electric.

The first one was a rotory norelco ... it was as though weasels tore my flesh.

I returned it and tried the panasonic because it said you could have wet or dry, even using shaving cream. So that's what I've been doing and it works ok.

I'm not completely satisified though. I may just suck it up and spend the money to use a new mach3 every couple of days.

I also thought about trying the old fashiond wetshaving since blades are so cheap but I'll probably cut the shit out of myself.

If I don't shave against the grain it looks like I haven't shaved at all. five oclock shadow at six am? doesn't work.

I dunno what to say then.  I also have very dark, thick growth.  If I shave against the grain I get irritated skin that looks like I'm a pizza faced teen.  I'd rather have the 5' o'clock look than a face that's on fire.

If you shave against the grain & have sensitive skin then you're going to get razor burn.  That's just the way of it.

Go to grocery store, pay $2.00 for a puck of shave soap, pay $5.00 for a cheap brush. Whip the soap in a mug until you have a great lather then keep going for another 30 seconds. Shave with whatever you want and spend the next few days saying "damn, I cant believe how good that feels."

1.  Shave after your shower.

2.  Use a VERY hot damp washcloth to soften your beard and prepare your face...even AFTER you're out of the shower.

3.  Use a new blade.

4.  Use a quality shaving cream or foam.

5.  Shave very lightly.  Let the blade do the work...do NOT press hard.

6.  When shaving your neck or other "tricky" places, gently pull the skin to make it taught to raise the hairs and permit the razor to mow them down.  Again...DO NOT PUSH with the razor!

7.  Shave with the natural growth of the beard first, then GENTLY against.

The keys are quality shaving soap, a gentle touch, a sharp razor and a HOT, DAMP face.

Take your time too...

I have very tender skin and a very tough beard.  The above was told to me by a barber.

ETA:  If you follow my recommendations, you will also notice that the blade will last virtually forever.  Really!

I am 62.  I have used just about every type of blade, including some electrics.  I even used a straight razor for some time.  Trust me, if you do NOT follow my recommendations, that straight razoo will quickly turn you into a casualty!

I use Gillette's blades...now it is the Mach3...whatever...the Ultra?  Anything with multiple blades ought to work well.

Oh...I forgot:  Be very careful when shaving across the jawline.  Be extra gentle if you shave down the line.

Mach3 Turbo here. Excellent razor. IMO the best out there.

I use a Norelco tri-head electric razor.

The key is using the beard trimmer first - otherwise it will RIP the hair our of your face (which REALLY hurts)
