Another SWEET movie coming!
http://www.msn.com/en-us/movies/news/steven-spielberg-to-direct-cult-favorite-%E2%80%98ready-player-one-back-at-warner-bros/ar-AA9ZZI4?ocid=ansDeadline11 :Steven Spielberg is set to direct Ready Player One, the highly anticipated project based on the popular sci-fi book by Ernest Cline that takes place in a virtual world. What a coup for Warner Bros, which will bring it to the screen along with Village Roadshow. This is expected to be Spielberg’s next movie after The BFG.

Hell yeah! But I am both filled with glee and kind of wary, it's going to cost a metric asston to get the rights to use everything that was in the book, and if they can't pull it off when it comes to the '80s/geek cultural references then it really won't be Ready Player One. Every time a "What book would you like to see made into a movie?" thread comes up I said I wanted this, but the rights would be a bitch. They're conceding the rights will be a bitch too: Now, the rights issue: The book is loaded with references of popular culture spanning decades, especially rich in 1980s video game icons. How will the studio handle that? "I think what we have to do is drill down to the best version of the movie and then see who wants to be a part of what will surely be a great film,” Silverman told Deadline. Then again seeing as how it's Speilberg he can probably convince certain people to sign on, the trick will be seeing if they can get enough to stay true to the book. |

Someone like him doing this is the only way it can possibly get done.. he has a lot of goodwill in the various industries this will span. I'm cautiously optimistic.. it seems like the kind of thing that would only work as a book, but I'm hopeful. |

craptacular book now going to be made into a shitty movie.. PASS!! it tried too hard to be hip.. Now if it was SnowCrash, or Neuromancer that would be cool. RPO nope.. It was a fast, fun read.. of course Wade is the quintessential Mary Jane, and the book is fan service to a generation. Doesn't mean it will be bad. I don't ever want to even see a Snow Crash movie attempted, there's no way they *couldn't* fuck it up, and I couldn't live like that. |

It like an Arfcommer wrote the book.. the dude has NO flaws to make it interesting.. |

This should be fun.. the OASIS stuff could be fantastic with modern CGI and Spielberg at the helm. ETA: I meant Mary Sue, not Mary Jane.. guess I got the weed on my mind again. |

So, another Tron, then? Quoted:
So, another Tron, then? Not really.. The Grid is a much more rigid and focused computer reality than OASIS.. OASIS is an MMO used for entertainment, but basically the whole world also uses it as a place to go to school, do business, etc. It's where everyone escapes the fact that the world has become a dystopian shithole. It was entertaining enough. I'm not sorry I read it, but it wasn't exactly Revelation Space.
The best part of it was the realization that the author wrote the book almost exclusively to make a shitload of late 70's-early 90's pop/geek cultural references. Making an fun read out of a bunch of references is nothing to sneeze at (though I agree that it's likely to be a disappointment as a movie). |
