Sorry, but I missed it on TV...

Did Gorbachev attend President Reagan's funeral?

Sat next to the Iron Lady herself.

Yes, he was there

I have alot of respect for him.  He knew he was going to come here and listen to a hundred speeches about how Reagan defeated Communism and the Soviet Union.  He took it like a man.

Not like Chirac, Vicente Fox, Paul Martin (Canada)

Gorbachev has actually stated that Reagan's will actually helped out the Russian people become free.
I thought he would be more bitter about no longer being a superpower.

Gorbachev was probably the greatest Russian leader in a LONG, LONG time (more than a century, and perhaps EVER.)  What drove him from power was not that he wasn't doing a good job, but that the reasoned and conservative pace he set for change was too slow for the folks wanting immediate gratification.  Had he been allowed to continue on as he was, Russian would probably be in a better position now.  You can't evolve a democracy out of a feudal state in a few years, it takes generations. Gorbachev's funeral will be as big a deal and as reverential I think.

Well said.  Gorbachev was willing to listen and negoatiate at arms talks.  He and Reagan always appeared to be long-time friends (it was that way with a lot of people and Reagan).  He is a far cry from the days of Kruschev.

If I ever was in a bar and Gorbachev came in I'd buy him a beer, or more appropriately a shot of vodka
if Jacques Courroie (according to dictionary.com the french word for strap. get it, jacques strap ) came in I'd kick him in the balls until he raised a white flag

so the former commie leader comes and pays his respects, while commie editorial writers here in the US are already slamming RR before his body is even in the ground!  amazing!

he's twice the man, if not more, than chiraq.  i don't care if i spelled his name wrong either.

No.  The only non-clergy speakers were Lady Thatcher (via videotape), Brian Mulroney, George H. W. Bush, and President Bush.

Just out of curiosity on the seating arraingements at the Cathedral, how do the Clintons warrant sharing the front row with GWB? So many more are worthy of these spots- Bush Sr and Barbara, Thatcher,Gorbachev , ect...  . Is there something I'm missing here? TIA.

It was easier to keep an eye on his hands that way.

Simple protocol.  Sitting Prez, VP, and wives, followed by former presidents and wives in chronological order.

Wanna bet Clinton is now planning on a state funeral for himself?  After all, think of all the good press Reagan got!

I agree.

Too bad he will be the last conservative leader they will ever have in the forseeable future.

Gorbachev butt-kissers need a reality check. Gorby was a driving force behind creating the United Nations Earth Charter, and probably no one has done more to promote it:

"My hope is that this charter (U.N. Earth Charter) will be a kind of Ten Commandments, a "Sermon on the Mount," that provides a guide for human behavior toward the environment in the next century and beyond."— Mikhail Gorbachev

The "Sacred" Text

""The protection of Earth’s vitality, diversity, and beauty is a sacred trust," the Earth Charter asserts. However, "an unprecedented rise in human population has overburdened ecological and social systems. The foundations of global security are threatened." Thus, "we urgently need a shared vision of basic values to provide an ethical foundation for the emerging world community."

According to the Charter, we must:

"Recognize that all beings are interdependent and every form of life has value...." (Unborn children, of course, are not included in the UN’s definition of "every form of life." The Earth Summit II documents continue to support the UN’s pro-abortion policies.)

"Affirm faith in the inherent dignity of all human beings." (UN agencies, however, support policies of euthanasia for those determined not capable of living a "quality" life.)

"Adopt at all levels sustainable development plans and regulations...." (This is a prescription for global socialism in a super-regulated global state.)

"Prevent pollution of any part of the environment...." (Enforcing this dictum would mean stopping virtually all human activity.)

"Internalize the full environmental and social costs of goods and services in the selling price." (This seemingly harmless sentence would empower the state to price, tax, and regulate all production and consumption.)

"Ensure universal access to health care that fosters reproductive health and responsible reproduction." (This is a thinly disguised call for socialized medicine that includes abortion and population control.)

"Eliminate discrimination in all its forms, such as that based on race … [and] sexual orientation." (This provision is clearly aimed at criminalizing those who refuse to accept homosexuality as positive and good.)

"Promote the equitable distribution of wealth within nations and among nations." (Few Marxist documents have put their "redistribution of wealth" program more plainly.)

The Charter includes much, much more. It ends with this stirring exhortation: "In order to build a sustainable global community, the nations of the world must renew their commitment to the United Nations, fulfill their obligations under existing international agreements, and support the implementation of Earth Charter principles with an international legally binding instrument on environment and development.""

And a policy wholeheartedly endorsed by the likes of the Clintons, Gores and Kerrys. All in all, would still have preferred to see the man who worked with RR to end the Cold War sit with Thatcher upfront than an opportunististic, egocentric and elitist couple like the Clintons there. It seemed unfitting, seeing as how the Clintons are diametrically opposed to anything the Reagans stood for or believed in.

Thank god there is a man in the White House who is differential to U.N. Speak and has no desire to tow that line. To hear Annan's words today only reinforce that belief that GWB is an American first and all else takes a backseat to the welfare of the Republic (unlike the Clintons, Gores and Kerrys ad nauseum). Praying for four more years...
