I was sitting in the bar Saturday night and this guy showed me this picture. He said his buddy in Texas shot this a week or so ago. He was out hog hunting and this little guy started to come up under his blind. He said it was 9'6" long, its head is 5 1/2" wide and has 22 rattles. Not sure but I would guess that has to be some kind of record.

This.

That is probably a 4 foot snake at best.  People duped by these pictures also forget how much a big snake weighs, and that you can't hold a big one up at arm's length.

thats a picture using tricks to make the snake larger...... this however, is more disturbing, and real.

Right - he's holding it toward the camera with a stick, so that it appears to be as long as he is, but that's just a trick, because the camera has the guy and the snake (mostly) in focus, and there's plenty of light.

Note how the end of the stick is about as wide as his face.  General rule of thumb, if it's not laid out next to a tape measure they're full of shit.

This is why I have a supply of 3-1/2" 12 gauge ammo.  2-1/4 ounces of #6 shot will take care of that problem.

He knows how to take a pic, like holding a fish out in front of you.

I killed this one last year on some land I hunt here in North Florida, I'm 6' 1, it had 13 rattles. I've killed a pile of rattlers bu this is the largest for me.

Id say the stick the rattler is on is about 4-6 feet long and that is allowing for the snake to appear much larger then it really is.

Texas has Western diamondbacks they average 3-4 but they do
get larger.
I know eastern diamondbacks get freaking huge.
If its a real pic then eastern would be my guess, and not in Texas.

IIRC there is a 10-foot eastern on display at the Florida state zoo. I ran over and killed an 8-footer on Eglin AFB back in '76.  They do get big.

The thing that has me about the photo in the op is the number of rattles on that snake.  That's an old snake and big snakes are old snakes.  It may very well be that the snake really is up into the 8 to 10 foot range.

The only thing 9'6" long in that pic is the stick he's holding the snake up to the camera with. The old "big fish" trick.

Forced perspective yes, but there are 12 or more rattles on that snake. It IS big and it is old.

For the guy who asked about Spanish moss, yes, the entire state isn't a desert. There are plenty of swamps and sloughs with Spanish moss in East Texas.
