I've got a 4th gen 4runner. Looking to put a front and rear bumper on it. Front is pretty easy, almost spoilt for choice, probably get a C4 or another. For the rear, though, I want a carrier bumper. This seems to be limited in choices. From what I've found it's basically this (with my own observed pros and cons):
So there's what I've found so far. I'm open to other suggestions. Plenty of options for fifth gens, sadly, but fourths get the shaft in this department it seems. I'm not 100% opposed to cutting the rear crossmember. It's a relatively minor thing to do, and the True North has an overbuilt hitch in it that would likely be equal to if not greater than the same crossmember hitch. I can also get high-clearance with Ascend or Coastal that also require it. I have a V6 which normally came with the crossmember hitch; mine did not, so I ordered a Curt frame-mounted for better stability and strength. If I gotta lose it, well, that's the breaks. |

Nyugen works seems less than you have listed. I think they would be at the top of my list. I’ve got a single full width swingout on my 3rd gen and prefer it to a double swingout. Sure it needs a little more room to open but you can do it one handed, and it’s only one latch and swingout if you need to get into the back. I think dual swingouts would annoy me for how often I gotta open my hatch. |

That seems like a lot of weight to put on a single pivot point, and if it swings free it's going to do some damage if it hits something. |

Just a spare. I took the Jerry can mount off after I never once used it. I don’t know what your use case is but if you can get away without having to hang an extra 100lbs off the back of your car that far behind the rear axle, it’ll improve the way it drives and wheels. |
