I think I could make use of a decent monopod.
Who makes a reasonable piece? How much do you need to spend to get something decent? |

You don't need to spend more than $70 to get a quality monopod

Got it for Mrs. Dual for Christmas. She's very happy with it. If you search Amazon, you can find Bogen Manfrotto monopod packages that include a tilt/swivel head with the quick-release dovetail for just $5-10 more sometimes. |
| Not sure if this is of interest to you. Around a year ago I decided to give a monopod a try and since I wasn't sure I would use one I went as cheap as I could. I went to walmart of all places and picked up a $15 one. It's given me decent service since I put a nice ballhead on it and only recently has it started to get sticky. It still supports my D300 with a 70-200 2.8 nikor on it (a 5-6) lb load. I'm using it when I shoot sporting events professionally and I don't really baby it. Not sure if I'll upgrade later this year or keep on with this. |

I will look and see which Manfrotto I have when I get home, but I love it. It is decently light, is a 4-segment version (which collapses smaller), and has no problem supporting my gear (I don't own anything THAT heavy). I think a lot of people buy more monopod than they need, which means it doesn't go where it is useful, but stays in the closet.
shooter ETA: Manfrotto 686B (I think) |

I have a Manfrotto 679B with a 3232 tilt head thingy. Works like a champ with my D200 and 70-200 f2.8 lens on it. I do regret not getting the quick detach head though to match my tripod.
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/353310-REG/Manfrotto__679B_3_Section_Monopod.html Will run you $64. It isn't the lightest, but it's built really nice and if anyone wants to steal my camera I can hit them with it. It is only a 3-piece setup so it is about 2'-5" collapsed, so it's not the shortest in that regard. Do measure the height you need. On level ground fully extended the height with the swivel head is just enough for the eyepiece on my DSLR to be at eye level. Any shorter and I would need a new one. |

Wow, $64 is a great price for that (same setup is like $77 on Amazon). I have ordered one. |
