Somewhere, someone asked about this.  I think it was buried in a thread with a vastly different title, and I can't find it.

Anyway, someone wanted to be able to transfer vinyl records to computer files (MP3/WAV/etc.).

Here's an answer I just ran across.

If you know what thread that was in, would you be kind enough to put a pointer to this thread in there, or to IM me the username of the person who was asking?

Thanks,

Jim

Or get an analog to digital converter.

Or just run the record player to the amp, and then the amp's headphone-out to the computer's soundcard line-in.....

(yes there is a tiny bit of quality loss, but probably 99.99% of people wouldn't be able to hear it)

Interesting, I wonder if this would work with guitar amps?

The signal needs to be converted from analog to digital.  If you have an amp that has analog in and digital out, you are in good shape.

...which is precisely what any sound card that is equipped with an audio input does.

As I recall, the person who was asking did not have a turntable or preamp, which would be the necessary equipment to pipe the sound in to the sound card.

This device also uses software to automatically 'rip' the songs from the record, without having to manually cut and edit a large audio file, or manually lift the needle between tracks and stop/restart recording.

When I record an LP, I record the whole side, then copy/paste the tracks to separate wave files afterwards.

Cool, thanks.
