Ive had the honor of meeting a Tuskegee Airman years back, and it was one of the greatest experiences of my life

Red Tails (Jan 2012)

bump,

I am pretty sure that during WWII young black men not huddle up and chant before going off to war...

I am a WW2 aviation nut, so I will see it for the aerial sequences and airplanes, but the latest trailer I saw at the theater had what I can best describe as a rap/hip-hop soundtrack that was wildly at odds with the imagery. I was like, WTF? Hip-hop music in a WW2 film?

Why do they have them escorting B-17s, I thought the Tuskegee flew with the Liberators?

Nah, they probably just exaggerate their accomplishments accurately.

Overplay discrimination?  Tennessee... check.

CGI looks ridiculously cartoonish.  I'll pass.

The options are:

1: Locate a huge number of American and German fighter planes, bombers and period naval ships, all in working order, all with satellite camera planes.  Which is impossible, so the movie wouldn't happen.

2: CG, and the movie happens.

You can apply these choices to just about every movie not confined to a set.

I will not go see it.  I bet it is nothing more than "Pearl Harbor" with black people.

On a small TV screen it looked about as realistic as Polar Express.  Do it right or don't do it.

I met a Tuskeegee Airman a few weeks ago.  He said Lucas had them out at his ranch to consult on the movie many times for a week at a time.  Hopefully it won't be a total stinker of a movie.

Should be high budget so the combat scenes should be decent.
I'll watch it
1/7/2012 5:01:06 PM EDT
[#19]
If the movie should end up over-stating the accomplishments of the Tuskeegee airmen,  OR if it stays completely truthful about their accomplishments,

which are impressive enough (The 332nd never lost a bomber to enemy action,  a record unequalled by any other escort squadron in WWII), and

by showing this movie,  it instills in some young black men a sense of pride and achievement,  and gives them the idea that they can also do great things

in their lives,  then it will certainly have been a movie worthy of its production costs even if it does not turn a profit at the box office.

Nothing would please me more than for some young black Americans to see something that makes them think that there's something better waiting for them

out there than a life on the dole and a case of malt liquor in the back of the donk.

Everybody should have some self respect.   If this movie gives somebody a way to find some,  that's awesome.

Of course the trailer looks good, but I would bet against it. Anything Lucas touches now dies a horrible death, if not in the box office then in the hearts of people around the world.

87% of Arfcommers will "boycott" it because of the special effects, music, or unrealistic dialog, and stay home Saturday night masturbating vigorously to their old VHS copy of "Strategic Air Command." Again.

"For me (George Lucas), Red Tails is like Flying Leathernecks," he says, the 1951 John Wayne charge through Guadalcanal. "It's corny. It's über-patriotic. And it's a really exciting action-adventure movie. As for the racism in our story, it's embedded in the material, so we just had to be careful not to overdo it."

I just don't get the overuse of CGI. It looks like a cartoon. Even though it may not have been the best movie in the world, Memphis Belle didn't look like a cartoon. There are plenty of P-51s out there, and a few B-17s. I think they could've used existing warbirds to shoot much of the footage and then patch in scenes with CGI. It doesn't look like they used any real airplanes in the making of this film.

What racism charge? I have not accused anyone of being a racist. However, I'm not unrealistic. There are racists here. And given the topic, they're likely to show up.

Again, what charge? I said I was waiting, just as people have, in the past posted, in before the (insert whatever they expect here).  You called it a charge. It clearly was not. If anything got the discussion off track it was your allegation of a charge of racism. If you would have let the comment pass uncommented upon, the  discussion would still be on track.
