| Our 6 year old Maytag fridge is sick, the freezer is only running at 37 degrees, the fridge is at 47 degrees. We're thinking if repairs are 1/2 the price of a new fridge we'll go new. We have been looking at Lowe's and other places and it looks like a new one will be in the $650 range, what really ticks me off is all the new ones only have a one year parts and labor warranty only, that's enough to piss off the Pope! The saleman said that basically there isn't any advantage anymore from one brand to the next. He said it's just a "crap shoot" when you buy an new one, the basics are all the same, just a difference in features. Is this true? |

Search refridgerator repair on the internet. Find a site that has troubleshooting and follow the prompts. They will ask questions and you give the symptoms.
My Moms refridgerator was not getting cold while I was visiting. I figured out that the condenser coil was a solid lump of ice. I let it thaw with the door open for a day and restarted. It worked for a few days and froze up again. I followed the troubleshooting chart and took it apart. I found the wire for the defrost thermostat has come unplugged. I plugged in back in and it was fixed. The fridge had been worked on years ago but I think that it came apart from heat cycling for years. I also found a panel that was partially blocking air flow from the ice maker. It works great now. Look under the refridgerator and around the frame. There should be a wiring diagram and specification sheet tucked in somewhere. Try fixing it. It will be cheaper than new one. You will need a voltmeter. |
| Is it making a loud buzzing noise then you hear a click and it all stops for a minute or 2 and then does it all over again? If so that means you have the dreaded tecumseh compressor lock up and the only way to repair it is to replace the comp everything else is just a temporary fix. The other common problem is with Maytags defrost system They have problems with both their bimetals and adaptive defrost boards. the easiest way to tell if it has a defrost problem is the back panel inside the freezer will have frost on it like a layer of snow. If it has that then it is a defrost problem and cannot move air. My company owns Maytag service and i am the lead tech for north central TN and south central KY. |
| Also there is no crap shoot when when choosing a new fridge. One brand is above all other when it comes to reliability and it is whirlpool. They have the least problems and the easiest problems to repair. For around 650 you can easily get a Roper Estate SxS which is a whirlpool. |
