| My boss keeps tellling me I need to see it. What's the jist? Just making fun of Christians or does it have some other value? I'm a fence leaner when it comes to faith. |

The best part is when he interviews the catholic priest.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=atkqOrz7qPU I understand he is a comedian but it cheapened the message. |

I'm sure a life of ministry would take its toll on a person but "Let them die with their own stupid ideas?" Wow. |

Anyone who truly has faith in God won't be bothered by something like this.
But I see a lot of people get really bent out of shape any time someone pokes fun, or appears to question in any way, their religion. It isn't very different than "Death to those who say Islam is not peaceful!"... just a matter of degrees. |

It's a big circle jerk for militant atheists. I have never met, seen, or even heard of "militant atheists". Are they coming knocking on your door, demanding that you renounce your faith? Handing out pamphlets supporting their claim that there is no God? Holding meetings where they harangue crowds into conforming to their beliefs? Collecting donations to further their cause? No, one thing I can say about atheists is, not one has ever bothered me about atheism. |

Quoted: It's a big circle jerk for militant atheists. Not really....though I wouldn't consider myself a 'militant' atheist. Not sure I've ever met someone I'd characterize that way. I think Bill Maher is a HUGE douche. That being said, there's a metric SHIT TON of stuff about religion, all religions that is incredibly ridiculous to non-believers. A movie highlighting that is little more than amusing. Far less so considering Maher is the star of the movie. |

A few years ago I would have been all over this, but now I'm happy to say I didn't even know the movie existed.
I'm no longer so insecure in my own lack of religious beliefs that I'm likely to be entertained much by watching attacks on people who still subscribe to their various silly superstitions. These days I mostly let them be if that's what makes them happy. At least that's what I try for, although it can be hard not to make fun of Mormons and other particularly goofy doctrines. We see it all the time here on Arfcom as well. |

Bill Maher is a prime example - I don't find him shocking or even offensive, just obnoxious. His films won't change anybody's mind and are mean spirited and hateful. I don't see that as any more "militant" than a billboard advocating any particular religion (which I also have no problem with). |

To be clear - I have just as big a problem with religious groups using their faith as justification for the same sort of juvenile stuff that Maher does. |

You get a lot of that attitude with priests (and laypersons too) whose formative experience occurred in the 60's and 70's. We're still cleaning up their mess, please be patient. |

About the movie: If you're not a Christian, you'll probably find it amusing. If you are a Christian, you'll probably find a lot of it to be offensive. Take it for what it is - Bill Mahr doing a comedy special, using religion as his muse. That's really all it is. |
