Anybody have anything good or bad to say about the model seven? I'm thinking about buying one in .223 to shoot this winter. I'm dead set on .223, but just trying to decide what brand of rifle. What kind of accuracy can be expected from and out of the box model seven? Thanks |

Model 7 is a great rifle IMHO. It handles and shoots well and does what it was meant to do. There are lots of other options like Savage 110 American Classic, etc., but I think the Model 7 is a fine choice. As much as I dislike Ruger politics, their M77 Compact is a sweet gun too. Might look at one of those as well. |
| If you want a short, light rifle in .223, hands down, I would pick a CZ 527 Carbine. For a bolt action rifle right now, for the money, you can't beat a CZ. Get'em while the getting is good, eventually either the price will jump or the quality will drop. They're like diamonds in the rough. |
| I have one in 7mm-08 and love it. Like they've said above, it's not going to win a long distance shooting competition due to the short barrel, but it's by far my favorite deer rifle. Plenty accurate enough (if I recall correctly, < 2 moa) and you can barely tell it's on your shoulder. The only beef I've had with it was cleaning the trigger assembly. More my fault than the rifles, I think I was guilty of over oiling it and caused it to gum up. But where the assembly is enclosed and beyond my ability to disassemble, it was hard to clean. I'd recommend a model 7 to anyone for hunting. With it's size, it would make a fine youth rifle too. |
Mine shoots just as good as my heavy barrel does, with handloads anyway. If you handload mine likes 52 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips over Winchester 748. XM193 with 10 shot groups about a half inch at 100 yards, handloads 10 shots will be covered by a dime. |

I have one, stainless in .308. The model 7 has a very light barrel, mine is touchy about bullet weights and loads. It's a great hunting rifle, but I much prefer my 700 LTR. For .223 rifles, I have a custom Remington Sportsman 78 (700 ADL), a Remington 700 LVSF, and a Remington 700 LTR ... plus a couple of ARs. Check out the LVSF, it's a VERY nice rifle. The LTR is nice too. I will probably rebarrel the Sportsman 78 and make a heavy barrel prairie dogger out of it. |
| I had an LTR in .223 at one time and got rid of it. The gun really didnt impress me. Felt great and looked great, but accuracy just wasn't what I expected. Also had a feeding problem. I have to admit, I really didn't work with it enough. I got aggravated and got rid of it. |
