You can easily tell how long a member has been around by their join date, and inteligent replies.  It may help to cut down useless posts ie: +1, , etc etc.

I've seen it work on another forum, particularly a car forum run a muck with teenagers.

ETA:  Added a poll.  If you're gonna tag, at least leave your thought...Yay or Nay.
ETA2:  Also, if you use post count when you consider buying from someone on the EE, it would encourage the use of a feedback thread more.

That would destroy a lot of arfcom member's life. arfcom post count = life

In a good way though.  Maybe they'd actually get out and shoot instead of caressing their safe queen.

I am something like number 17 in terms of post count here, and I would be happy to see post counts moved from the post to the profile of the poster.

That would be another good option.  I know some of you work so hard on your Post Count Credentials.

Sadly, that seems to be true for some people.

I voted to get rid of individual post count, even though that will break a few hearts.

I voted "Yes." as I don't really care, and a lot of times when you disagree with someone with 50 posts they get all defensive and claim that it's a big bad post count trying to oppress them.

It's hard for them to admit they were wrong so, they grasp at anything.

I run into the same problem. It's a pain in the ass when someone claims you are wrong on a technical point because "obviously you don't have a life!"

I think PC should be replaced with some sort of rating system. If you answer someones question they can add to your rating. That way those that truely offer advice and provide technical information are rewarded and those that run up their PC on the GD with "+87" and "dupe" post get nothing.

I like the post count just the way it is. It helps me with my low self-esteem issues.

ps... I think the author of this thread has post count envy.

I think the rating system would be cool... but the same people who are on here all the time that are the first to jump on every thread would be answering all the questions and nobody else would get rated.

My heart says leave the post count since I can take a quick look at the amount of posts that someone has when posting over in the trouble shooting forum, and what materials that I might need to add to the response to get him up to speed on assemblies or descriptions,

But, after seeing guys with thousands of posts that have never even pulled a rifle down past cleaning, don't know if my analogy of post counts really makes any real sense at all (at least as a personal general guide line).

I will have to admit there are some stupid people with high post counts out there (not any of you of course)and i will also admit that if I had more time, my post count would be a lot higher as well.  But keep them atleast till I get over 1k

WE HAD REMOVED THE POST COUNTS AT ONE POINT, FYI!!!!

Unfortunately the whiney, fag, asswipe contingency (that always seems to get their way because they cry loudest) cried like bitches and the post counts were restored.

I completely agree with hiding them.  Maybe put them in the user info only.

3/4/2006 7:04:32 PM EDT

Mostly it's the low count members who want them removed.

Gee, I wonder why?

Ok... the post counts in the User Info would be good. To add to that... a breakdown of where the posts were made...
Like.

Might help people discern how credible/knowledgable someone really is.

Also, I really like the reputation system that's on some sites. Not 100% effective, but around here it might work pretty well.

Or just spend a little time around here, on all of the forums and you can pretty much tell who the guys with experience and/or knowledge are and who just comes to discuss useless, non-firearms related stuff.
3/5/2006 6:47:28 AM EDT
[#49]
How about adding a reputation rating system instead?

Someone makes a good post,  give him a positive rating.   If he's talking out of his ass or wasting time,
give him a negative rating.

Call it a signal to noise meter.

I figure I'd be bouncing around the middle of the scale.   The positives and negatives would pretty much cancel each other out.

How about no ratings what so ever, and just judge people on the quality of the post?

Do you seriously need a number to decide what to think of a post?
