In the last month two or our dogs have gotten the ring of their choke collars caught in the cracks between the boards on my deck. The first time I thought it was a fluke, but today I saw it was time to act. The stray pup the girls brought home was making all kinds of other worldy sounds and when I found him his eyes were bugged and blood was coming from his mouth. It was a real struggle to get his chain loosened from his throat and calm him down enough to get the loop unstuck. If I hadn't been home sick today I'm quite sure he would have strangled himself. The chains stay off unless the dogs are on leash from now on. |
+100000 They are for training purposes only. Unless you have one of those gay "kickme" dogs that you insist carrying around all the time, even in areas clearly marked "no dogs". If that's the case, put a choke collar on it and let it run around all it wants |
I use it whenever I walk my neighbor lady's German Shepherd Dog. The thing is fucking massive. Nice dog but it likes to pull. I wouldn't trust myself walking it without the choke collar. |
Thats fine, that's what there for. |
Nothing wrong with that...that's what I do when I walk my rottie. No she's not mean and aggressive, it's just if she sees a rabbit and wants to pull, then it tightens up and reminds her who's boss... There are too many uneducated pet owners out there that don't know this though... Read too many articles about dogs getting choked to death because their chain got caught |
What does massive mean? Mine is just medium-sized.
|
I don't understand why people buy dogs, and then chain them up in the yard There are pack animals. Isolation kills them.My dog is walked on a choke chain because he is animal aggressive, and I don't want him to eat someone's pet. He's gotten a lot better about reatcing to other animals, but still gives them a dirty look here and there. That's the only time he is on a leash/chain. |
Medium sized? That bastard is a beast! Very pretty dog. |
It's very big for it's breed(not just big for a dog in general(i'd guess larger than yours but idk how big ur girl is as a comparison lol)). The thing could easily have it's way with me if it wanted to. |
He actually is a Shiloh Shepherd - a perfect GSD times two. They range from 120-160 pounds for males. He is about 170. The largest of the GSD line I have ever heard of was 195. And, yes, he does bite if he thinks there is good cause. I also know (by accident) that he can put two teeth clear through your hand as quickly and cleanly as a good-sized nail gun could do the job. I should also mention -- with that kind of weight and strength -- choke chain required. He could drag you around the yard flat-footed with any other kind of collar. ETA: I meet a lot of people who have described their GSDs as "massive". They usually mean 100-120 pounds because -- unless it is something pretty rare -- they don't get much bigger. The GSD breed standard is 60-90, about half that of the Shiloh Shepherd. For comparison, his back is about even with the level of an average kitchen table. |
Maybe urs is bigger then. I think hers is around 150(a bit on the chunky side though but still very strong). He could drag me around with the choke chain on but if he goes after something he stops immediately after the chain tightens. Im not worried about him going apeshit on me but if I didn't have the choke collar on him I would worry about him dragging me across the street after a bunny. |
150 would be a very special GSD. In all the time I have had him, I have run into a few breeders who specialized in large GSDs. The biggest GSD they have ever reported to me was 165. Happily, mine won't chase anything if I snap my fingers. The only time I really need the choke chain is when he goes into protective mode because he gets serious about that. |

Eat shit and die you guys. I just don't want someones dog to get strangled. My daughter's hobby is 4H dog training and we didn't know this was a real problem. Fucking A, we are constantly bombarded with warnings about trivial stuff. Turns out these collars are truely hazardous. The message remains, if you leave the choke collar on your dog, take it off. This is my first post in GD. You guys suck. |
I don't know of anyone here who has posted that they leave their choke collar on the dog. The only thing that has been posted is people walking them, in which case you would be fully aware of anything going on with the collar. If you are referring to me walking the dog with it on then lets use some common sense. Odds are a lot greater that the dog would break free and run in front of a car without the collar than the collar getting locked up so bad I couldn't free it before the dog suffocates. |
Actually, since I've never used a choke-chain, I probably would have done the same thing you did and left it on. Thank you for posting this - it added to my edumacation and will keep me from doing that in the future. I think some of these guys here are just "pulling your chain" and don't mean it personally. However, some probably are just being assholes. Not pointing fingers, mind you |
|
Not at all. We will continue to use choke collars when walking the dogs. I'm grousing about the master of the obvious comments. Although I sort of expected such in GD. The guys whose dogs have the chains on right now aren't posting. I can't believe I'm the only Fucktard out here. |

I used to leave a choke collar on my dog when she was a pup, with a little leather strap. My trainer recommended it so if she was bad, I could grab the strap and give her a quick correction. But I never left the chain on her when she was outside and alone for the day. One day, she was in the bedroom playing with the cats when all of a sudden she got really quiet. I called to her, and she didn't come. So I went looking for her. Somehow, she had stepped THROUGH the chain with one leg. So the chain was half around her neck and half behind the opposite front leg. And man was it on her tight. She could breathe fine, but she could barely move. Thankfully I had a pair of pliers with the wire cutters on them handy to cut her free. I now only use it when taking her for walks, to the park or anywhere that she's leashed. |
haha oops I didn't realize you were the OP when i replied to that. |
What are you talking about? Almost everyone agrees with you......have you read the comments? I ALSO agree with you. I ONLY use standard collars for tags and I use choke chains ONLY for training. In fact, I prefer to use a harness more than anything. because they allow you a better hold on the dog's whole upper body. |
Mine has had hers on for 6 1/2 years now...I never thought it would be a problem for her. its not loose, and she's huge (so no getting stuck in a fence). The regular collars used to choke her. I am assuming its the same choke collar the rest of you are thinking off (not the one with spikes right?). This is seriously first I hear of them being a problem. Not that I am supporting it or want to argue about it. -Helen |
Since you started with the personal attacks. IT IS CALLED A CHOKE CHAIN YOU DUMB FUCK! Why the fuck would you leave something called a choke chain on an animal? That's like putting your kids to bed in something called an explosive crate with a lit cigarette! Jesus people are fucking stupid! |
Might wanna head on back over to the wimminz forum, before that thin skin of yours gets a wrinkle or something. ![]() Sheesh... |
Holy crap... You use a "an explosive crate with a lit cigarette" as a training tool for your kid?? And I thought MY dad was tough ![]() ETA: had to add a " ![]() MACE... Dont take it too personally... Some of these guys can hit hard... But SINCE you brought it up... We were at the store and my daughter walks down the dog leash aisle and asked me "What's this" as she holds up a choker collar... I told her and she said "Cool! Lets get it" Ummmmm I then taught her the meaning of the old phrase... "You cant teach an old dog new tricks" there is NO WAY that dog is gonna learn anything new at this stage of her life. My dog isnt old to the point where we are making plans for her demise but she is no puppy and will not adapt to a choker. But your advice is good to those that do have those collars on their dog. |
|
Just curious here, so tell me. Anyone got any stats on the number of dogs killed by choke collars? Let's compare with some other cause of death such as getting struck by cars, getting bloat from eating too fast, getting struck by lightning, etc. etc. Or is this one of those dangerous things like the chances of getting killed by a deranged properly licensed CCW holder? |
Because the dog outweighs my wife by fifty pounds and, if you come to our door, you will thank your lucky stars that I left it on. Ummm, yeah, just like a box of TNT. Yeah, sure, Gotcha. How many dogs are killed by choke chains as opposed to those killed by TNT? |
, those should be used for training purposes only.

He's gotten a lot better about reatcing to other animals, but still gives them a dirty look here and there.
