Report: Assad linked to Katyusha rocket attack

By JPOST STAFF AND AP

Syrian President Bashar Assad was linked to Sunday's Katyusha rocket attack on Kiryat Shmona, the Kuwaiti Al Siyasah newspaper reported on Monday.

In an exclusive article, the paper claimed that Assad's motive was his anger at the Arab League foreign ministers' positions during last week's Cairo summit, particularly the stances of Egypt and Saudi Arabia, who called for an end to Syrian involvement in Lebanon.

According to the newspaper, Assad reacted harshly to the criticism, saying: "They will see how I will plough up Lebanon."

A previously unknown Islamic terrorist group claimed responsibility on Monday for the Katyusha attack.

The self-proclaimed group, "the Jihadi Badr Brigades - Lebanon branch," vowed in a statement to continue attacks on Israel.

"We had promised our people Jihad (holy war). Here, we again strike the Zionists when a group from the Jihadi Badr Brigades struck the Zionists in the occupied Palestinian territory," the statement said.

Al Siyasah did not say whether the Katyusha attack was perpetrated with Assad's silent agreement or after a specific instruction from the Syrian leader.

There's that "internal struggle" at work again... I had no idea internal struggles = rocket attacks.

Strange though. Why were there only two rockets fired? If this report is correct, wouldn't they just fire a barrage and get this thing started off right...?

mac,

it was interesting yesterday to see how FOX handled this.

First Report was of two rockets
Later report was 2-3 rockets
Finally, just "a rocket attack on Israel" was reported.

I seriously doubt Assad is associated with such a pitiful exhibition as that shown yesterday.

Here we have Assad, who's about to get filleted in the assassination of Lebanon's PM a few years ago, and just coming off the murder of the anti-Syrian lawmaker in Beirut, directing a newly formed terrorist group to fire rockets into Israel.  I'm beginning to wonder if he'd rather fight Israel than face the charges of the UN.

Interesting.

I'm trying to follow the logic here.  Egypt and Saudi are miffed about Assad's meddling in Lebanon so to show them he means business, he launches a couple of missiles at Israel, who had nothing to do with his dispute?  Makes about as much sense as anything in that region.

And this is a surprise?

As one who has followed the goings on in the ME for about fifty years, it certainly isn't a surprise to me.

The Arabs/Muslims won't be happy until Israel is destroyed, preferrably by their hand with a nuke (The Muslims are big on symbolism and show.).

The place has been a powderkeg since 1948 and it isn't going to change any time soon...not until there are large fiery mushroom clouds all over the ME.

Firing more than a few rockets at one time makes it much easier to locate the firing point. Fire a barrage and they would likely get F-16s pounding their asses.

Naturally. But we're talking about TWO rockets here

Not exactly a thunderous statement from Mr. Assad.
