This reporter is doing a piece on how easy it is to break into your car and steal your belongings.

Let the hilarity commence.

When thieves broke into my pickup they used a prybar centered top of the drivers side window and popped it that way.

Real criminals don't use hammers they use a chuck of ceramic from a spark plug the size of a pea, work very well apparently.

Strike either bottom corner of the windshield for good effect.

He hit the hammer sideways on the window at least once.

The windshield is laminated. You can hit that all you want, all you'll get - eventually - is a hole the size of the hammer head.

Hammers are not ideal tools for shattering tempered glass, nor is the full backhand swing. A TINY strike area is what's needed, and higher velocity = no extra effect. Either flip it around and use the claw, or find a centerpunch like the pros use.

Small striking surface.  It really does not need to move that fast.

You can also break off the antanna from the car and use it to pop the windows.  Works after a few wacks.

Should have taped a piece of a spark plug to the head of the hammer.

I lost it when the window dropped...then they had to move the camera and you could still see the open window to the left

Spark plug porcelain works very well as does a spring loaded center punch, antenna does work, but not as well.

Tried all of them several times at the junkyard on cars in the crush pile

Life's hard when you are stupid.

All you have to do to shatter tempered glass is scratch it through the temper layer.

A self striking center punch works well.

One little 'click' and knock the kernals of glass out of the way.
Even the claw side would have done the job.

Safety glass (windshields) are two layers of glass with a plastic layer between them to hold them together even after the glass cracks.

It can produce a nasty scalping if you plant your head into it at high speed.

The glass breaks, the plastic stretches and the small pieces of glass move apart.
Hair enters the gaps between the glass.

As the head then pulls away the plastic goes back to size, the glass pieces move back together, and the hair is trapped.

If the head continues to move away from the glass either the hair breaks, tears out, or sometimes rips a chunk of scalp loose.

A large and massivey enough  enough object can push the entire windshield into the car (deer rides up hood, ends up in front seat).

Good idea. That way you're screwed no matter what.

Failure = Shattered hand
Success = Slaughtered hand

I just recently responded to a call where a mother had accidentally locked her 6 month old in the car along with her keys. As I was arriving the mother was throwing a large 25lbs landscaping stone at the rear passenger window (opposite of the child) and it wasn't doing anything. I gave her my window punch (liability reasons) and she got in with one strike. It was kind of amusing watching her heave this large rock at the window and it bounce off.

the business I am in calls for me to cut and drill locks, enter cars etc all the time. customer signs waiver and I am in the vehicle or through the door in seconds.   LOCKS ONLY KEEP HONEST PEOPLE HONEST
all tools are available at Lowes or Home Depot for the most part....except for the slim jim
its always funny when they say I dont think you can cut that lock its supposed to be a really good one.
Oh and storage facility gates,alarms,cameras etc are a joke. They are there for marketing only...makes you feel safe when you rent from them.
