Oh please let Chuckie get his ass booted out this time around. www.newsday.com/news/local/wire/ny-bc-ny--schumer-senate0105jan05,0,5777720.story?coll=ny-ap-regional-wire Republicans eyeing several potential Schumer opponents By MARC HUMBERT AP Political Writer January 5, 2004, 2:38 PM EST ALBANY, N.Y. -- Top New York Republicans are eyeing several potential challengers to Sen. Charles Schumer's bid for re-election this year, including Erie County Executive Joel Giambra, GOP sources said Monday. Also on the list of potential Schumer opponents is Gail Hilson, a New York City-based party activist, and state Sen. Nancy Larraine Hoffmann, a Syracuse-area Democrat-turned-Republican, the sources said. A Giambra spokesman, Tim Clark, said his boss "is attentively listening to people from Washington and Albany who are pitching him on the run. At this point he's in the just-listening phase." Clark said Giambra wanted to say nothing more, at this point, but would be meeting in Albany later this week with state GOP Chairman Alexander Treadwell to talk about the possible race against Schumer. Through a spokesman, Hoffmann declined to comment while a telephone message left for Hilson were not immediately returned Monday. The three names surfaced Monday after the Republican majority leader of the state Senate, Joseph Bruno, touted Hoffmann as a potential Schumer challenger and vowed the GOP would have a "worthy candidate" to challenge Schumer's bid for a second term. Bruno's praise for Hoffmann came when he was asked, during an interview on Albany's WROW-AM radio, about her as a potential Schumer challenger. Bruno quickly added that he expected Hoffmann, in the state Senate since 1985, to run for re-election to the state Senate this year instead. Other top Republican sources quickly added the names of Giambra and Hilson to the list of potential Schumer challengers, saying both have expressed an interest in possibly running. The Bruno comments and the quick addition of the other two names underscored the GOP's continuing search for a Schumer opponent. Already, a host of big-name Republicans, including former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, have said they have no interest in taking on Democrat Schumer, who has a campaign warchest of about $20 million _ bigger than any other up-for-election senator. The Buffalo-based Giambra, re-elected just last year to a second four-year term as county executive, was looking for assurances from party leaders that adequate money could be raised to finance a credible campaign against Schumer, the sources said. Like Hoffmann, Giambra is a former Democrat. Hilson narrowly lost a state Assembly race in 2002 for an open seat in Manhattan that was won by Democrat Jonathan Bing. Thus far, only a little-known Wall Street trader, Michael Benjamin, has declared his candidacy for the GOP Senate nomination. "We still have several months," Bruno said. The state Senate leader said "discussions are taking place" to find a Schumer opponent and Bruno promised "it will be a worthy candidate." Noting that Hoffmann is a woman, head of the state Senate's Agriculture Committee and a former Democrat to boot, Bruno said, "I think she'd be one of the best candidates in New York state (for the U.S. Senate seat)." Bruno also said Republican Gov. George Pataki could be an excellent Schumer opponent _ if the governor would run. "If he wanted to run, he would win," Bruno predicted before cautioning that he was "fairly positive that it's not on his mind." There has been some speculation that Pataki might run for the Senate, but not until 2006, when former first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton is expected to seek a second, six-year Senate term. Schumer won his Senate seat in 1998 by defeating three-term Republican incumbent Alfonse D'Amato. Schumer spokesman Phil Singer, asked Monday about the potential Republican challengers, said: "Chuck isn't looking over his shoulder. As always, he's working hard to be the best senator he can be for all of New York." GOP Chairman Treadwell issued a statement praising all three Republicans. "I'm not surprised that these individuals have been mentioned as possible challengers to Chuck Schumer," Treadwell said. "It is a testament to the number of strong Republicans we have in New York who can actually deliver for our state and work with President Bush, as opposed to Senator Schumer who is all talk and no action." |
| If you could get rid of all the jerk-offs in NYC then Schumer and Hillary would be beatable. There are 2many people that are dependents of the social programs that will vote for them. I hope they both lose , I don't think Rudy would be much better. He is not pro gun. |

Guys, Don't shoot me I'm just the messenger. The GOP isn't going to mount a serious attack on Chuckie or Hillary in the near future. And don't look for the GOP to spend much cash to help whatever candidate decides to get their teeth kicked in. They will spend that money on causes they can win. Every incumbent Senator has a huge advantage over a challenger. In this case, double whammy being two highly visible liberals from a liberal state. Unless a major politician in NY jumps into the fray bringing their own start up campaign funds and a built in voter base, fugetaboutit. We got Chickie and Hillary for the next 20 years. |

Being from NY, I will tell you all that unless someone like a Rudy Guilliani, Pataki or someone with real GOP weight runs, we will not win against Chuck. We should import someone to run against both Chuck and Hillary. The Dems won't be able to bitch about it. Hillary could have easily lost if she had some decent competition. That guy, I can't remember his name for he was so lame, ran a miserable campaign against Hillary. Now I fear we may be stuck with her for 12+yrs. One more thing: Hilary will never win a Presidential campaign. |
| Just how do these fuckers get elected anyway? I ran on the Lazio (Anti Hitlery) campaign in 2001 and was SHOCKED that he lost. It defied all logic and reason that she won! I can only name a couple Hitlery fans and they're all women liberals from NYC. The danger lies in her being so widely popular in the entire US. I'm hoping she's retired from politics before she can do any real harm in the outside chance she's nominated to run for Pres one day. |
