How long is the academy if you're a reserve officer?  I just spoke to a Deputy and he said that I could join the reserves and go to the reserve academy every other weekend. My wife is in school and I am the only breadwinner for now and this would be great for me as I still need to make money and the reserves only pay minimum wage here (Cullman,Alabama).
Thanks in advance.

Depends on where you are.  You'd have to call the Sheriffs Office if you want a definite answer...  Some depts don't even have "academies" for reserves...  Some do.

I have never heard of a Reserve academy......I dont know how it is in your state , but here you have to be state licensed as a peace officer (TCLOUSE) weather you are a reserve or Full time....but some Academy's have a night time schdule for people that cannot attend day time classes...it usally takes a little longer than the day time classes..

The one I went to was 20 weeks, two nights a week, 3-4 hours each night.

Sometimes we also met up on weekends (range, K9, ...)

It's a total of 480 hours. Jeff. Co. SO does theirs in about 13 months total.

ETA: When you complete the academy you are APOST certified. You can then go fulltime.

My Auxiliary academy was 46 weeks and 660 hours. We were in class every Tues and Thurs. from 6pm to 10pm and Sat from 8am to 4 or 5pm. When we graduated we were state certified as police officers. It was long but well worth it.

Correction bro!  ATTENDED, repeat ATTENDED and graduated...

Its a great academy, but 13 months is a long time.  Make sure you are ready for the commitment.  the first 6 arent bad, but the last 3-4 are very long...

I would do it again in a heartbeat...lots of fun and the instructors there are all good guys.  (just dont piss off the Sgt)

Ours was 400 hours, done on Tues, Thurs, Sat, and Sun. At the time, it required more classroom hours than the full-time academy. Our new reserve academy is 650 hours, and if I'm not mistaken, the new full time academy in Oregon is 760.
