I contracted with a local painter to paint my new wood patio.  Tongue & grove pine ceiling, wooden baluster handrails, exterior trim...
We agreed (in writing) to use Sherwin Williams  exterior Emerald Acrylic Latex Emerald paint.

They started this week.  They're almost complete, and I noticed that they were using Emerald interior Acrylic Latex paint.

Any suggestions?  Should they just put another coat of exterior paint?
The painter is apologetic, and seems to willing to work with me on a solution.  Fortunately, I haven't paid them a dime yet.

I can see 100% how you could fuck up and use interior paint on the outside, especially when English isn’t their first language.

Whoa that's pretty F'd up mistake they made OP.

Im not even sure they could sand all that down enough to get it off.

Could they primer over it and start all over it?

Ask the old guy at the nearest Sherwin-Williams. In my experience he knows his product.

I'd be repriming all the surfaces and then going overtop with the exterior paint.  I'd also be eating all the costs for the additional labor and paint, as well as warranty if any issues come up down the road.  That being said, im a small company that relies on reputation, so a bigger company might not give a shit.

probably lacks the UV inhibitors and moisture barrier promoting agents

Should have used Loxon self cleaning acrylic.

I’ll ask my SW guy, but I don’t see why you couldn’t go over it with an exterior product. Kind of depends on how they prepped/primed the new wood.

This.

I would ASSUME that a few coats of exterior on top would be OK, but I'm not necessarily confident in that.  Ask the expert.

If it were me I’d pay the painter for the paint & supplies used & send them down the road.

Wait a year or two until there’s noticeable degradation of the latex paint, pressure wash it all off.

And then use a proper oil or epoxy paint.

Latex paint outside is less than ideal.

We just put SW Woodscapes on up north on the outside. Painter said that was the good stuff for wood, doesn't even need to be primed first as it is self priming.

They prepped it with S-W Exterior Latex Wood Enamel.

My SW guy says to scuff it up (lightly sand), re-prime, then coat with exterior paint of choice. Again, I’d use Loxon self cleaning. The stuff really does work. Kinda spendy however for the average homeowner.
