Good for you!
I'd like to go out at 62 (6 more years), but knowing me I'll probably get my ass canned before I make it....

I retired 2 years ago at age 51. Lifes been good. No more acid reflux or chest pains.

Are you "getting too old for this shit!"?

What?  I thought you were like 24.

Yeah, I had the impression that you were a young kid on your first hitch for some reason.

Anyway congrats and thanks for your service.

It's probably because I'm immature.  But, I've been AD since 93...with a break for school for 6 years.  That time still counted thankfully.

Are you gonna take Steve on adventures all over the world?

Congrats!

My wife went down in hours this year and will go down a few more next year. I should be done in under 24 months.

We'll both work seasonal or part time.

My dad never retired he died at 83 but he loved working .  He started before his parents died at his age of ten.

I see that staying active and having a thinking job kept him going.

People who just stop die.

I would like to try a few years to see if I can handle it.

Hope you didn't factor Social Security into that equation. It is going away soon. The country can't afford to continue it.

They are also talking about cutting back .mil health care into retirement. So, I would make plans there too.

He's .mil, so it's not full-on "sitting at home playing golf everyday" retirement.

His military pension will not cover his expenses unless he's living in a tent somewhere.

He'll have to pick up work somewhere else to make ends meet.

Everybody is going to take a bite of the "cutback pie."  Everybody.

I expect that they'll even go after the .mil retired guys.  Not in the sense of not paying them, but reducing the check over the years by reducing COLA.

...and you're right.  They have already proposed the Tricare increases for retirees.

Everybody is going to get to play in this game.  Right now, each side is just fooling themselves that only the other side has to change.

Congrats man.  I'm right there with you.  I've been AD since 93 with no breaks in service and I am now counting down the days. It is a good feeling being so close but I also wish I could hit the fast forward button to get the next year over with.

Cool, then you can show back up at work the next day, in your same office, with the title "consultant" and a 100% salary increase.

That's the way it works around here...

I did. You spend almost 22 years in, and when the switch is thrown, part of you doesn't want it to happen.

The other half realizes that the reality is that the force is drawing down, and better for you to retire  and keep some young guy in uniform who has years left in him.

Not counting on SS money, not old enough to collect.  My Retirement will pay a mortgage, car payment, utilities etc...I'll work part time for fun money.

But the great thing is, I will be able to quit if I don't like my boss.

I'm kind of going through an early-life crisis with this. I have been AD since 93' as well, albeit later in the year. I have obligated myself through 23 years of service though so I'm stewing for a bit longer. They have relaxed the requirement I believe so if I really wanted, I can request to bounce at 22 years.

My predicament is that I changed professions at the 13 year mark, and subsequently will not face time limits, but rather requirement to promote. With current and forecasted numbers I will be able to stick around past 30 if I desire. I just need to figure out if I can play reindeer games for that long. I know I am whining and these are paltry "problems" that most people would commit homicide to have. The decision to serve certainly takes a toll though.

Good luck man, you've earned the cushion.

Is Steve okay with this?  I mean, he may not want you around all the time........he probably needs his Steve time.

This.

In his own way, Steve served his country too. I'm sure Arfcom would hate to see your relationship suffer due to the new dynamic of you no longer leaving. I'm fairly certain the family service center has classes to help you two transition.

Steve has travelled more than most people here.  We'll continue travelling when I retire, I get bored staying in the same place more than 4 years.

I'm hoping to die on the job.  it will sort of disrupt the day, maybe they will put a chalk outline around where I dropped.  They will be talking about me for years to come.  someone will say...."management finally worked someone to death." "Remember that guy that fell over dead, right over there, what was his name?"....................just kidding I hope......good luck in the future.

I just started the retirement process today.  A year to go.  I'm going to have to get a job, though.

Well, after I use my G.I. Bill for a couple years, anyway.
