It also depends on what state you live in.

Both Oregon and Washington would be good examples of where it would pay to familiarize yourself with the laws regarding transfers, due to their recent changes.

I'm sure the states with stricter gun control laws are even worse. Imagine trying to explain this scenario in New York or Chicago...
