I was mowing the grass and the engine shut down.

I tried to restart, thinking it bogged down on heavy grass, but nothing.

There is one click, sounds to my untrained ear like the starter solenoid.

I started looking around further and discovered the oil drain had opened and the oil came out.

Fearing the worst I removed the flywheel cover and tried to turn the motor with a breaker bar (gently)

It turns perfectly smoothly, so I am somewhat optimistic.

I haven't checked the battery, yet and will shortly.  ETA:It reads 12.5 volts
My real question... is there a safety shut off that prevents the engine from starting if no oil?
It is a Briggs and Stratton   17.5 HP engine.

I know Honda engines have them (oil safety switch).

Easiest diagnostic? Fill 'er back up and try to restart.
