Open beta starts Tuesday at http://www.riftgame.com/en/ Just curious if anyone has tried it out, I see a lot of talk about it on the WoW boards. It looks decent. |
|
I've been playing the betas for a while. I liked it enough to preorder. It's WoW but with greater character customization. The dungeons are fun and challenging right from the start. There's nothing easy about them. The solo content is boring. It's essentially WoW. The group content is great though. Very fun. The PVP is standard. MMO PVP has never been very fun for me. It's just standard here. The seller of the game for me are the major rift events that happen 'randomly' when there's a certain % population in a zone. It's the first time I've felt like I've been playing an MMO since DAoC and UO. I'll be playing it for sure. I haven't been playing the open betas (there have been a few of them actually). |
|
Thanks Credge. I have been reading up on it. It looks like some of the developers used to work on WoW, so that explains the similarity if it goes beyond just being in the genre. I'm a pvper and looks like they will have pvp servers with promoted world events. I guess I will see on Tuesday. |

Got a good number of EQ2 devs on it as well. The combat feels more like EQ2 than WoW, but the questing is more like a linear WoW execution. It gets better at about 25, but the first 25 levels, if all you do is quest, is fairly boring. The game has two huge sellers for me. The first being the rifts, which are very fun. The second is the character/class system. It's like a mix between Titan Quest, WoW, and originality. It's very solid. As for the PVP, I played a Warrior (Reaver/Beastmaster/Warlord) and I was taking damage, dealing damage, and being useful. It's one of the only times I've felt useful in PVP as a tank type class ETA: I made the mistake of making a melee cleric (I love playing melee clerics in other games) my first time around and it was awful. A lack of a combo system on the clerics made the combat one button pressy. Very, very boring. Did not enjoy it at all. I might have later on, but from 1-14, where I stopped that character, I stopped. I switched to a warrior and had a blast. I've also played a mage, and, although I picked three souls that didn't really work that well together, it was very fun as well. I think my Shaman/whatever else it was I chose just isn't good for soloing from 1-14. |

It makes sense though since clerics will be healing instead of building points. Well, unless you mean there are pure damage clerics. |

It makes sense though since clerics will be healing instead of building points. Well, unless you mean there are pure damage clerics. The warrior and rogue archetypes have combo systems, with the rogue having more combo points than the warrior with the warrior having three and the rogue having 5. Clerics can heal, I don't know how well, a group with melee attacks. Here's the plan I had for my cleric (which I'll probably actually do at some point in launch): The Shaman is built around buffing and doing damage. At 14 I did not have a single heal. The Justicar heals his group by dealing damage in combat. I had a group heal that, every time I swung I healed my allies. The Warden has heals over time. I didn't get to put any points in to Warden (or pick it) in that beta. The point and class system has changed a bit since that beta. Essentially my goal was this: Put enough points in to Warden to have decent heals over time, and then max Shaman and Justicar to get big damage attacks and good reactive heals. Since the shaman is essentially a pure melee class, it would have been very nice to have some form of combo system there. Because there wasn't, I was literally playing the game with six keys. WASD, 1, and mouse 1. Part of the problem I had with the game was that there's no group content until you hit 16 (the first dungeon for either side starts at 16) and my character would have shined as a damage/support style character in a group. Realistically I should have chosen a ranged damage cleric archetype and a pure healing cleric archetype to get through the first 16 levels and then switch to what I wanted when I hit 16. Of course, I didn't know you could do this when I was playing the cleric. Despite that, after playing Warrior and Mage I pre-ordered the game. I'm super skeptical about the modern MMO and the post 16 content as well as the major rift events was enough to get me to buy it. I mean, at two in the morning I see my screen shake, the sky turn purple, and then some text on the scream from somebody yelling in the distance. Everyone in the zone starts going "?????" and someone checks their map and sees that there are hundreds of rifts opening up everywhere, and hundreds of invasions going on. Essentially there are about 1,000 extra monsters in the zone attacking towns (and taking them over!), people, and all sorts of stuff while about 200 of us had to fight them back. Raids formed, we fought lichs, big golems, all sorts of crazy stuff. Some raids defended certain points, others went out and closed rifts, others went out to collect these crystals to end the madness... it was like a relic raid in DAoC but much more fun. |

My roommate has been playing the Betas and has Rift on pre order.... but after playing WoW on and off for 6 years and being severely dissappointed with DC Uni online I think im just gonna skip the MMOs altogether from now on. Rift looks like a more complex WoW, nothing really origional about it, its just a compliation of other MMOs like War online, WoW and EQ. And from what i've seen of the combat it isn't as fluid as WoW, your character kind of skates around and all abilities seem to be delayed from when you actually push the button. Anyway I dont mean to shit on your parade here just giving my opinion. |

Anyway I dont mean to shit on your parade here just giving my opinion. You're pretty right on the money. It's a more complex WoW. The animations aren't as good as WoW's, but it plays exactly like it. If there's any delay between when you use an ability and when the damage occurs, it's probably something on your end. Unless you're talking about the global cool down on abilities, which is slightly longer than it is in WoW. The one big thing that RIFT has going for it, in regards to lag, is that there will never be any of it on their end unless there's something extremely bad going on on their end. They're using some sort of cloud server which allow for thousands of monsters and players to be in an area all at once. I don't blame you for skipping MMO's though. This is my last MMO until EQNext comes out, and that will probably be my last MMO ever. They've gone down hill since the EQ2/WoW line up of MMO's came out, resulting in pretty terrible MMO's all around. This one, I feel, takes all the good things of all the modern MMO's, sans the boring level 1-16 content that almost all MMO's insist I do, and puts it in to a package that's pretty decent. |

looks interesting i might try it out, but I'm getting tired of the time sinks i have to pay for. i miss UO where i could jump on and in 4 hours or so i could gank people granted it took a couple days of macroing to get it to where i was really reliable at killing but eh who cared because i was naked with a gm spear and some bandaids(made out of the last victims clothes). i think this is why FPS's are so popular you can jump in and be on equal footing game wise. this sounds like Aion which their rift events bogged down into 400 people looking at each other just out of range because the frame rate was like 2 and the lag was measured in minutes. |

The FPS lag in rift events are acceptable. WoW raid style fps lag. Absolutely no net lag. ETA: But the game is definitely not for everybody. There's a lot of trial and error and experimentation with character building. Anything will work, but getting the right formula might take some time. Luckily it's pretty cheap to do. |

I was kind of put off after the first 15 levels, it is quite boring. However, it has really picked up from then on. I play an anti-caster build in pvp which is a dominator/elementalist. It gives me 2 mana drains, 2 silences, and a don't cast or get fucked ability. Not too mention an instant cast polymorph. |
| I haven't played a MMO since Daoc... which I played a ton(stopped in like 03-04), buff bot on a separate account/pc and all. But I tried playing this open beta for a couple hours the past two nights... and man it's boring. I'm only level 15, but everyone has said it picks up at 17-20ish, so I'll give it a try till then, doubt i'll buy it though. |

Completely different world. The solo PVE starts to get interesting as well around 20. |

Quoted: Bump this thread...So i am probably going to get this... pre-order release is on Thursday, so who else is getting it and what server, need to get some people together. I'll be on a RP-PvP server, but they haven't released the server lists yet. My main issue is which class to play. The only one I have ruled out is rogue. I like champion, druid, or dominator. Just not sure which I will choose. |
|
I will be playing....I tried the Beta, fell in love with the graphics and the gameplay and pre ordered the Digital Collectors Edition.
My guild will be playing on the PvP-RP server Harrow (unless they change names....we will find out today) I will be creating my main which will be a Mathosian Warrior (Riftblade/Paladin/Reaver) and I will also be making a High Elf Mage although not sure on the spec for him yet. My guild will have over 50 players on opening day of headstart.... we are called the Sentinels, we are a multi-game guild with lots of very good people and excellent MMO players. We are into PvP, but don't require it....all raids are scheduled and we run multiple raids per week at different times to accomodate our over-seas members. you can check us out www.the-sentinels.net If it sounds like a guild you would be interested in, fill out an app and PM me or post here that you applies and I will make sure you get invited into the guild. My forum name is Halligan, there is a section of the application that asks how you heard of the guild....put my name there so we can get you guys in. |

I also liked the dungeous...very well done, graphics are cool...neat bosses and my favorite part is that if there are no clerics...no cleric gear drops...so the chance of rot is lowered. PvP was a blast too....all the classes serve a purpose...no matter the spec....there is something for you to do.....really looking forward to the release. |

Yep. We should 100% get a group going. I'm up for filling whatever spot we need. Game opens up at 10:00 AM on Thursday. Sounds good, I'm going to roll with a ranger/bard/nightblade.. I think so, just need to figure out the server when it comes out. Or we can tag onto PFD's guild and play with them. |

Quoted: So what kind of characters are you guys thinking on playing? I've narrowed it down to a warrior Champion/beastmaster or a Mage Dominator/stormcaller/elementalist for pvp and Necro/lock for pve. I will probably switch out to Riftblade/pally for leveling if I go warrior. |

I am on the fence. I want to play it, but the only thing I have capable right now is a laptop. "Can you run it" says I am well past the recommended requirements, but I would hate to have to play it on low settings. Unfortunately, I was about one hour to late to get in on the beta.
This is what I am working with with. How well do ya'll think it will run? Window 7 64 bit AMD Turion II P540 Dual-Core Processor 4.0 GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 376.3 GB free space |

The vid card isn't necessarily a gaming card, but it should run this game well. Update, looking at the forums I am seeing several people had issues playing Rift with that video card, you may want to hold off. |

The thing about roleplay servers is they are much more social than normal servers. You also never have to actually roleplay, I know I don't. What happens is that guilds will have roleplay events that you can participate in if you want too. No one runs around saying roleplaying stuff in parties or groups. The one negative aspect is that RP servers do tend to draw in more chat trolls, usually because more people talk in chat than on normal servers. P.S. they also seem to have more active world pvp. |
|
The sentinels play on RP servers because they are historically more mature players and less children....we do not actively RP. We are a heavy PvP guild as in we go and pick fights and we will definately be involved in warfronts.
When Beta was over several of out members had the PvP souls unlocked and points spent......we actually have a video posted of our guild seeking out Defiant and kicking the hell out of them. Viktor, give us a try...if you dont like it we are not going to be upset if you go elsewhere. |
|
Excited gentlemen. Debating between my Reaver/Beastmaster/Warlord beta build, an Archon/Dominator/Warlock, or a melee cleric with some points in to warden. Since we'll be on a PVP server, playing a full time dedicated healer might be interesting for sure. I just can't decide. |

If you choose to roll on the PvE server it is the same app....But I don't know how those players are. Looking forward to seeing you all at launch |
