Hi Guys, I'm looking for some help reviving my old H2O rig. Back in March 2008 I built this rig: Cooler Master Stacker ASUS P5K Deluxe Motherboard Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.4GHz G.SKILL 2GB DDR2 @ PC2 6400 EVGA 768MB GeForce 8800GTX Creative SB X-Fi XtremeGamer 7.1 Hiper 880w PSU Seagate Barracuda 500GB SATA HD Seagate Barracuda 160GB SATA HD (2) (2) Samsung 226Bw 22" WS LCD Monitor During my 08-10 deployment I came home to find my "amazing" ex had improperly moved and stored it causing some leaking and corrosion. Today I'm looking at reviving the rig with new MoBo, CPU, RAM, GFX Card, Monitor and Keyboard. I've been out of the hardware game for a while and need some help picking parts. Here's the catch: I'm trying to do it for around $1000. Right now I've picked out: Right now I'm subtotaled at around $1275 depending on the memory I pick. I'm curious as to how these will match up with each other and my existing parts. I plan on starting off with air cooling and then seeing what money I have left for more water cooling. Looking for thoughts, opinions, compatibility issues, maybe some ways to cut cost but maintain performance. As far as uses for the rig, I'm working from home - online, so need to be able to handle several windows and programs at once. I'm also a photographer so I use Photoshop a lot. And of course I'm a gamer - looking to see the Frostbite 2 engine in all its glory. Thanks in advance guys! ETA: I forgot... those links from the old rig are from another post elsewhere from 2008... I'm sure they might have some issues. |

Thanks for the links. Any info or advice on the parts I picked? I've lost track of the different bridges on the MoBos. Also, how is my 880w PSU lacking compared to a 650w PSU? Just curious.... I've got plenty of plugs and, when I bought it, was one of the highest rated ones you could buy for a reasonable price.

The Z68 motherboard is the newest available and lets you take advantage of features like ssd caching among others. The video card offers a different cooler, but ti isn't worth the $30 over the standard card. There is no benefit of choosing the 2600k over the 2500k for your usage. 16GB or ram is overkill, 8GB will handle all your needs. The muskhin ram is lower latency (CAS 7) cheaper and has a less intrusive heatspreader design. The g110 keyboard is okay, but the MS keyboard has better reviews and is significantly cheaper. The HP lcd monitor is a TN panel which isn't nearly as good for any color critical work (like editing photos in photoshop). Your current powersupply is not 80+ rated and doesn't seem to be all that well designed compared to the corsair. Not to mention you will be running that psu in the 25-50% load range which is not optimal for maximum efficiency which is typically found in the 50-75% load range which makes a 650W psu a better fit for you. In addition a bad powersupply can kill your entire computer, you wouldn't want to risk that now would you. |

For future water-cooling, I got a Corsair H60 setup, and keep my i7-2600k (@4.4ghz) and runs about 80F idle, and 140F max while running prime95.
I even got it on sale, which saved a few bucks. Nice quiet, fast computer. |

Thanks for the help so far guys. 501st, that's great help. I need to do some more reading on the PSU change but it seems to make sense. Your list totals about $1110 on NewEgg right now. About $150 less than my current list. The chipset info helps. Might keep looking. Freakinout, I prefer to build my loops. I like being able to pick specific pieces and customize it to how I want it. Thanks for the advice though! ![]() Anyone else? |
