These may be hard for laymen to differentiate, but the experienced predators know how to probe to weed them out. The 'fanning move' is not something to try against a mob, but it can work against 1-3 predators even if the prey is perceived to be scared, because if it isn't a bluff, even (especially?) a scared person can still pose a lethal threat. There was a you tube early on a few days back showing a thug holding up his camera phone on a dude. He kept saying “dude is armed. Dude got an iron”. The guy was fanning and hanging a bit back. He didn’t get attacked. Others did. He side crawled away and out. Never saw a gun. Smart move. If it was a bluff, awesome. If it wasn't, no brandishing charges possible.
