I saw a critter today (here in Taxachusetts) that I couldn't identify. He seems to have set up housekeeping near my holly bushes by the front door, and looks like he's dug himself a little hole in the ground. It appears to be a rodent of some sort. Dark brown, almost black in color and shaped like a mouse but fatter and a tad larger. more or less the same diameter from tip of nose to base of tail, which is unlike mice, which tend to be pear shaped. Tail like a mouse. Very little protrusion of the nose. Not a rat. Any ideas?

I had been hearing the rustling of the pachysandra and such recently so figured there was something in there. Today, I stepped out onto the stoop to go to the (detached) garage and looked down and there he was on the ground nosing around. It took a moment for him to spot me and hide in the shrubs and ground cover. Like a moran I had left my  cell phone with 13mp camera in the house, so no pics yet.

If you notice your flowers disappear down the hole like a cartoon or the roots are eaten off, it's a vole.

Very possibly so! Image search revealed this, which looks a whole lot like what I saw.

Really? I want to get another look at him to be sure of what I saw, but you think them to be beneficial? How so? I am not averse to the flora and fauna doing their thing if it doesn't hurt anything.

Well heck--a little research indicates they are NOT beneficial in town, and especially in someone's yard.  Might as well stomp him, as they are prolific as hell.

Not too built up here, and my lawn is not exactly going to make the next issue of Better Homes & Garden...
