I saw the original when I was eleven (1975.) It was uncut on proto-cable tv. I remember there were complaints about the level of violence it showed. The best way to promote a film in the 1970s was to get critics to say it was too violent or graphic. There would be lines to get tickets.

I never saw the remake. The reviews say it centered too much on the violence and ignored the premise of the original.

Was it really that bad?

The remake?  No, it was even worse than that. One of the leading actors even said it was a really bad movie.

I liked the remake.  Not the best, but nowhere near the worst film I've seen.

The violence wasn't over the top at all.

Did have an interesting setting.  Don't see many films that take place in that part of the world.

Remake sucked pretty badly. As always, find an old copy of the book.

Future Sport should've been the remake.

it's kind of dumb to be shocked by violent content in a movie based on a short story titled Rollerball Murder.

The remake totally missed the point of the story, and was rendered pointless as a result.

And... it had LL Cool J in it. So, there's that.

ETA: The original short story can be read here.
