This winter I'm planning on taking the engine out of my project car to remove the rustproofing from the engine compartment, do some work on the engine and thoroughly degrease/paint the engine.

Are the $59, 1000 lb engine stands by Harbor Freight enough to get the job done (GM 350 short block)? This isn't something I'm doing on a regular basis, it will be used this winter and MAYBE one more time after depending on what I do with the car.

I have heard of stands bending and was wondering if these 1000 lb stands were beefy enough.

Whatever bolts, nuts and washers that come with it in the box,  throw them away immediately.

Use good grade 8 bolts and good thick washers and you'll be fine.

I always weld the legs to the upright as well.

Get the one with two legs up front if available makes it less wobbly, I had one tip over on me one year

If its going to sit for a while on the stand, you can put a 2x4 under the front of the engine and rest it on the front of the stand. It will keep the nose up and it will sag less.

A complete iron headed iron intake small block should be around 600lbs.  Replace the bolts that are with the stand.

What everyone said is true, get some real hardware and do not get the single leg version.

I added a piece of 2" square steel to the front of mine to stabilize it.  One time one of the rear wheels lifted off of the ground while I was working on an engine.  That was enough to make me modify it.  You could also use a 3"piece of angle and bolt it on, which would be simpler.

I've got three of them.  One has had a Chevy 350 on it for 3 or 4 years just sitting in the shed.  Another one has had a HO quad 4 on it for almost 5 years.  The third one had a Chevy 327 on it for a few months and we rolled it all around the shed and across the yard to the Camaro when the engine was installed.  Rolling one of those through the grass/yard is tough.  Decided to build a garage to work on the cars.  Its nice.

No issues with any of them.  They are all the double leg models so are pretty wide/stable.

I've seen the ones with one single leg coming out the front and those definitely don't look stable.

Are these decently stable?

That one should work just fine, just make sure to go the spend the 20-30 bucks to get the bolts to replace those ones and the ones you need to put motor on it. Don't be like me and have one fall over because you have some dick weed in garage messing with shit, so I no longer buy the single front legged/wheeled stands and longer let dick weeds in garage  but it also gave me a reason to take the engine to the machine shop again
