just got new AR-15.  The 30 round magazines seem to fit and work great when empty.  Loaded with ammo, they dont lock in the rifle.  They literally fall out on the floor.  Whats the prodlem?  Me or the magazines?  Or both? Thanks for any replies.

Only load 28 rounds and they'll snap right into the well like they're supposed to.

Some of mine work with 30; some work with 28.

If you load them with 30 and lock the bolt open, the mag will latch in just fine.  What you are encountering is the full mag against the closed bolt.

Sounds like you are not pushing them all the way in.
There is no need to "underload" a 30 rnd mag in a properly functioning AR.
You do need to give them a "slap" into place though, to make sure they are fully locked in.

Slap that sucker in, Texan!  I guarantee you aren't going to break it.

Also, try to use USGI magazines instead of after-market hi-cap mags.  They work much better and you will almost never have feeding problems.

Welcome to the board![beer]

(You are supposed to send the first 10 people to welcome you to AR-15.com a box of Hornady TAP or a 30-rd. magazine, FYI [:D])

If you are inserting the mag into the rifle with the bolt closed it will take a bit of effort to get it to "click" in. With the bolt locked back it should go in easily. If they won't lock with the bolt back then there is a problem.

All of mine work with 30.  Are they USGI mags?  If they came with the rifle as "new" I would bring them back and tell them to give you better mags!

Forgot to add, welcome noob[moon]

Agree with give them a slap first. Some mags loaded are a bit harder due to spring rate on the rounds.  They will losen with time but a good rule of thumb is always slap them in just in case. This is not unusual for new mags.

Obsersvation, the metal mags seem to be more prone to this while the plastic are a bit less. You will probably find less rounds in the mag the easier it goes in.  Rule of thumb is if five or ten rounds are a problem then you definately have a mag issue and need to take em back.  Of course, all of this is based on your lower being to spec.

With the bolt back, this should not be an issue at all.
