| So I just estimated my BCM midi 16 has around 2000-2400 rounds through it and most of that is pretty slow paced shooting. Only 1 mag dump through it..I am curious how many more rounds is this thing good for? The throat in barrel doesnt look bad at all and there are no cracks on bolt. Im curious, should I keep stalking up on ammo or should I look into getting a new upper? |

You have a lot of work to catch up with Pat Rogers.
I think his rifle is over 40k now. Filthy 14 |

Haha. I was just curious, I know it aint over the hill..Was actually kind of wondering how much throat errosion a hammer forged bcm barrel can handle before it is key holeing at 50 yards...glad i could entertain you guys. Oh, now you tell us it's a CHF barrel. Filthy 14 is a standard barrel and still went >40k. |

It will function, but not be 100% and accuracy will be severely affected. You can buy a new barrel and bolt, but it will cost more with the necessary tools than to buy a new upper. Just sell yours for scrap ($150 or so) and buy a new upper. I'm interested in buying your upper for $150, shoot me a PM. |

On the off chance that you aren't trolling, because you sound like a troll, I'll give you a serious answer: Replace your gas rings every 5,000 rounds. There is no need to replace them any sooner, so don't. Replace your bolt immediately IF you see cracks or IF it breaks off a lug. If you see no cracks and don't have any broken lugs, don't replace anything. Replace your extractor and extractor spring IF you start having problems with extraction/ejection. Don't worry about your barrel's condition until you have at least 10,000 rounds through the gun if you are shooting normal ammunition. (ETA: For some reason, I feel the need to state that you should continue normal barrel maintenance, I simply mean don't worry about wear!) If you are shooting steel cased ammunition, which also has horrible and retarded steel jackets on the bullets, check your barrel at 6,000 or so. If you ever do replace the barrel, which will be after a long time and probably significantly more than 10,000 rounds, replace your gas tube at that time as well, and that would probably be a good time to replace your buffer spring, hammer spring, and disconnector spring. If your accuracy goes to hell but your bore looks good, remove your flash hider or muzzle brake, and check that there isn't carbon buildup inside messing things up. This has happened to at least one other member on here IIRC, but he was over in the retro forum. Reinstall with a new crush washer. The lower receiver, upper receiver, charging handle, and fire control parts get replaced if they break. That may very well be never. |

I was wondering about the life expectancy. See,I build ak's and I know how strong and long those last and I always heard that the ar was much inferior but I do not beleive or agree with this. |
