| It seemed to be a big problem in the 90's there was even a song about it "Runaway Train" Why did kids runaway so much back then? I don't really hear much about it these days. Did you or someone you know ever runaway? |

Parents used to be parents back then... it means that kids didn't always get their way and weren't always chummy with their parental buddies.
Why would you run away today? Parents cater to your ever need, schools can't touch you... and someone has to pay your iphone bill. |

Kids were healthier back then. Now they get winded if they try to walkaway. I can agree with this. Also, a severe lack of discipline for kids these days. You get in trouble, you get sent to your room where your xbox, cable tv, ipod, and laptop are. There's no reason for em to leave |

The problem was so bad, even Bon Jovi wrote a song about it. https://www.ar15.com/images/smilies/icon_smile_shy.gif The Bon Jovi song is definitely better than the Soul Asylum song. It is especially humorous to listen to Mr. Bon Jovi deride people who put too much emphasis on lipstick, plastic, and paint.

Are you kidding me. People call in run-aways all the time. Ooh....I can't control my kid, let me call the police. Some people actually wait a while to call, others call..."My 16 year old daughter is 2 hours late getting home from school."
Really? She will be home and will probably be pregnant when she gets here... They are just some of the calls that I loathe...I have stories....just more Tales from the Hood... |

What a JBT. |

A friend of mine ran away one night and ended up at my house...9 miles from his. There was snow on the ground, and he was soaked and freezing. Mom called his parents and they came and got him that night.
He said he had a fight with his mom so he walked out the door and just kept going... This was somewhere around '96-'98 I think... |

90s anecdote. Acquaintances in my high school, bro & sis one grade apart, dosed their parents w/ acid at thanksgiving dinner and ran away in their folks' car w/ credit cards. Never to be seen at school again, but the bro mysteriously showed up at graduation and walked w/ the class. |

Quoted: A friend's ~17 year old ran away from home with her boyfriend. She called her Dad about a week later, when they ran out of money. I took off at 17... Mom came by my work 3 days later asking when I got off so I could watch my brother/sisters while she had to go do something. Told her I left 3 days ago and thanks for noticing... All hell broke loose and then I didn't speak to my parents for over a year. Never went(moved) back home... All is well now 18 years later. edit: Oh yeah... the 2 times I ran away on base in Germany and the MPs brought me back. I was like 2 or 3... I wanted to play on the playground or something. ![]() |

Did you or someone you know ever runaway? In part, it was due to what they were taught in school, that they should not allow themselves to be victims of parental abuse. This is true but unfortunately, most teens (99%) don't even know what really constitutes parental abuse. Additionally, many groups, including some churches, actively promoted getting children away from what they deemed an abusive environment (often based solely upon the word of the child/teen). It was just another form of "I've got a better idea" liberalism, which by design or by coincidence, served to weaken the family; and do damage 99% of the time trying to protect the possible 1% of actual abuse cases. |

You think this was a 90's issue? Kids have run away from home as long as there have been kids. My step-dad did it in 1946 and joined the Marines.
