Going from Oregon (not very humid) to Virginia (very humid) in the summer once, my 3 mi run time went from 20:30 to 23:30 within a week. |
| Yes, running in high humidity is debilitating. Though I don't think you need a HRM to go run (unless being highly competitive) you have to breathe heavier because moisture takes up space in the atmosphere and your body can't cool itself well because the sweat is hardly evaporating as there is already a lot of moisture in the air. |

I agree. No need for a HRM for the vast majority of people. I've done plenty of running in my time and never needed one. (highly competitive, anal retentive, or medical reasons aside) |

That sounds like what it did to me, it added a minute per mile for me. I ran 2 miles in 17 minutes with a 20 pound pack and boots on, I usually do it in about 15 minutes. I never knew humidity was a factor as far as cardiovascular exercise, I did know that it makes it harder for your body to cool down though. |

Humidity makes endurance exercise more demanding because your body depends on evaporation of perspiration to do the lion's share of cooling. The extra moisture in the atmosphere makes that evaporation more difficult. That moisture also lowers air density, but inhibition of cooling is the major performance limiter. |
