I have a Fire Pit that has a decent amount of rust on it but it's still pretty sound. It had some thick mesh
screening on the sides that have a coat of rust also... I want to de-rust it as much as I can and paint it..

Anyone have any rust removal tips to make my job easier????

Thanks in advance....

POR-15 kit.  Follow the instructions to the letter and the thing will never rust again.

I just use flat black hi temp bbq grill paint.  I use it on my smoker.  No prep, I just throw it on.

POR is very expensive.  I would check the temperature rating before using it.  A good coating of this on your fire pit may cost more than your fire pit.

Thanks for the tips... The POR looks good but I don't think the prep materials are heat rated..

Looks like a coating of black grill paint is in the works.. Might run a wire brush over it just to
get some of the rust bulging off...

Any chance you have the ability to sand blast it before painting?  That, followed by a coat of high-temperature paint would make things nice.

*Harbor Freight has adequate blast tanks for cheap.  You would just need a shop compressor (approx. 10+ CFM of air @ 90 PSI), which is not cheap.

I do have access to a big ass shop tank..... I've been meaning to check out Harbor Freight.
Sounds like it's time for a trip...

Surface prep is everything for painting.

Your NRA magazine has a coupon (on the HF full page ad) for 20% off any one item.  That makes the blast tank very reasonable.  Plus they always seem to have them on sale.

See if you can find someone local who does dipping.  Kinda like putting it in a hot tank.  Had a local guy dip a cast iron patio set for me.  Pealed all the old paint and rust off, and then I picked it up the next day.  Cost me $25 for three chairs and a table IIRC.

A fire pit will usually get hot enough to burn off paint and then rust again.  That is why I don't spend any time or effort on prep.
