The investigation is (was?) being led by the Marshal of the Court.
There were numerous, fawning news articles last Spring about her, a former Army officer, and how thorough and capable she is. Maybe she isn’t all that, after all. The leaker, this guy maybe but there were also rumors about a woman who also clerks for Sotamayor and has media buddies, is hiding like a rat. If you’re such a fanatic about your cause, I’m not sure why you wouldn’t stand up and be proud of your actions. Certainly would mean losing your clerkship, but you wouldn’t go to jail for this, and you’d almost certainly get offered a job by CNN. Half the country would call you a hero. Every Decision of the SCOTUS has some political effect (otherwise it wouldn't have reached them to decide the case & clarify the law(s) or Constitutional principles associated with the case).
