Okay, you can only pick one!!!! This is going to affect a planned purchase. In a SHTF (more on the side of TEOTWAWKI) situation, which would you pick. .308 or .223 9mm or .45 Keep in mind you have to carry all your ammo on you, with no hope of resupply with the exception of off the dead. BTW you are in N. America. |

I have a M1A but haven't had the chance to fire it yet. Not only that, 1 mag ain't gonna be enough. So if the SHTF tomorrow I'll bring my trusty Eagle Arms shorty. USP45 fullsize comes along as well. Two 10rd mags may not be enough. Change my handgun caliber to 9mm instead. I have a P226 with a few hi-caps including a factory 20rder. |

5.56mm .45 ACP The AR strikes the perfect balance between weight, size and firepower. .308 is fine, but it's heavy and has too much range for what I need. The AR15 allows me to carry more ammunition, and has an effective range for the situation. I won't be able to identify threats beyond 150~200 yards anyway, so why do I want to shoot at them? Plus, anything 600~800 yards away can be avoided. Remember, you want to avoid confrontation where possible. .45 ACP because if they are that close to me, I need to take them down NOW, w/out medical available I can't afford to get wounded. |

I have all 4 in pretty good supply. I voted .308 and .45 as when I run I will be running in to country that has bears as well as people. A .45 might not hit a bear hard enough and nor would the .223. I am not happy about the .308 being my choice as the 5 loaded 20rd AR10 mags I have weigh a ton, and that's JUST 100 rounds -- UGH! However, that choice allows me to pack the PSS too for extended hunts or taking out targets of opportunity with little chance at a counterstrike. FWIW. Ed |

What happened to a .50BMG You know, walk softly and carry a big stick. I want a MaDeuce for the SHTF scenario. Mounted on my patio. I sit out there eating MRE's and capping SUV's Long range. Short range. Land vehicles target. Air targets. Human targets. Doesn't matter. [:D] |

.223 and .45 (specifically a 20" flattop w. ELCAN and a Colt 1911A1). I like the long-range and penetrative power of the .308, but I'm not sure I see when long range really gets me in a TEOTWAWKI scenario. If people are so far away from me that a .308 would do, but not a .223 - chances are I can just walk the other way. Because of that, and the need to carry as much ammo as possible in a TEOTWAWKI situation, .223 is definitely the way for me to go. |

I voted .223 and 9mm because of the availability, cost and increased accuracy of the ammo. An urban SHTF scenario (namely, one I would be looking at) would mean I would face ranges from 0 to 100yds and not much greater. These calibers would be the best for me also based on what I own. That's not to say I would just scrap my FAL, though.[:D] |

Colt M4 (15 x 30 rd mags) Glock 21 (2 hi-caps + 2 x 10 rd) My vote reflects the above choices. But I'm in agreement with lordtrader - I'm grabbin' the McMillan .50 cal TAC if the wife and I need to leave the house and vicinity, and camp someplace secure... being able "to reach out and touch someone" from long range can be effective in dissuading any bad actors who might try to cozy up to us. |
