I am in need of help from my fellow ARFcomers

I am in need of a SHTF/bunker down/bamf/zombie rifle for the way things are headed. I'm going with an AR, but because of the ways of the danged Liberalness of California won't let me build one because I am not 21. I was thinking about waiting for the LaRue PredatOBR and getting that, but I am not sure about having a piston system. And what optic to use? I was thinking Trijicon Acog/Accupoint or a Leupold VX-R 1.25-4. What is all of your input, any is helpfull

You can build one in California when not 21. Your just gonna have to spend a little more at the start and buy a complete lower. Its around $150 extra compared to doing it with a stripped but its the only way. Thats what I did. Then just swap out for any parts youd like on the lower. Apart from that the rest of the rifle is up to you.

You're a teenager and you're going to buy a $2000 rifle with another K of glass?

Nothing against Larue, but I wouldnt pay that much for a rifle, esp a shtf kind of gun.  If I were in your shoes, I would find a core.15 kit or a delton, in commpliance with the USSCA and then spend the money on mags, ammo and a good optic

If your anywhere close to RifleGear in Fountain Valley, then go down look at stuff, handle it, and talk to them. You can get an idea on what to expect to spend on a Brand new quality rifle. But my overall advice would be buy something like a complete Spikes Tactical for your first AR , a lot cheaper, and you get really good quality stuff with great costumer service.

But ask your mom & dad first B4 you buy.

I did try and purchase a complete lower, bought it from Spikes and sent to Rifle Gear, but they told me I can't buy.

Gotta start somewhere, right?
My next bet besides the Larue is a DDM4V5

Try getting it shipped to a local FFL dealer. Maybe there is an issue with RifleGear being online cause you'll have to do the 10 day waiting period for the complete lower. I had no problems with this. Although my local shop had the complete Spikes lowers already. Don't know why they're giving you a hard time. Unless you are trying to make an AR pistol?

I had it shipped to Rifle Gear and went to pick it up in store, the older Asian guy told me I couldn't get it because you needed to be 21 to buy a complete lower in CA.

Well thats not true at all, unless something has changed since 2008. I bought a complete lower only from Ammo Bros at 18

You can buy one if you are 18. Ask someone else that works there like the owner, he knows his shit.

IMO the SHTF rifle is a Colt 6920 with an ACOG mounted atop the carry handle.

Mine is a spikes complete lower, with an adams arms complete upper.

I use a bullet button on mine since it's really not that hard to use, is legal... and easily replaced down the line.

<~~ Richmond CA native.

oh, look for deals, I got my Aimpoint M2 during a group buy here for dirt cheap.

My thought process is if I ever got stuck in California, go for quality, not quantity. You're already limited on magazine capacity, so why not make those shots count.

For semiautos, a Garand in .308 would be a nice choice, and I believe the FN49's in 8mm are CA legal. Both take clips for quick reloads. Ammo relatively cheap and available. Make your shots count, and pack a punch.

Or you could go really old school and pick up an Ishapore 2A in .308 (10 round capacity). They are stripper clip compatible as well.

Unless you've really got a hankerin' for a modern platform, I can't see the wisdom of limiting yourself to 10 rounds of a smaller caliber, or being hampered with a bullet button and weird Cali designs and such.

If you cant get an AR to use to it's full effect (bullet button, small mags, etc), just get an M1A Scout.

This. With the amount of money you're talking about spending on a CA legal rifle, forget .223 and get something WORTH IT. A good semi .308 with a decent optic will make you much, much happier in the end. Especially since you're wanting it to be a SHTF rifle. ARs are nice and I love mine, but that being said I'd trade it for an M1A or M14 in a HEARTBEAT.

Of course I was your age once and loved to post on forums such as this about "What rifle/pistol should I get?" with no real intentions of being able to get anything suggested or that I wanted. If you're serious and have the serious amount of cash you're talking about, go for the M1A/M14.

if you guys are worried about a SHTF scenario you should stop worrying about 10 rd mags and bullet button.

magazine rebuild kits.. stack em deep
standard magazine release... have it on standby and it'll take less than a minute to swap out.

Instead of getting a nuetered AR15, go buy an M1 Garand rifle from the CMP. Be sure to take up CMP competition, it's great marksmanship training!
2/6/2012 7:53:08 PM EDT
[#22]
funny how a simple part and a mag limit makes it "nuetered"? Most ranges in CA limit you to 1 shot every 3-5 seconds.. most of us go shoot to enjoy shooting and dont sit there bitching to ourselves about the limitations...... that said the limitations do suck, and the rules are fucking retarded but sometimes you are stuck in the area you are at and make best with what ya got.

course he could always go the ARFCOM way and "Get Both"

If you're going to get an ACOG - make sure it's a model with BAC AND get a great mount for it - like the LaRue.

Mounting it on the carry handle not only puts the sight a bit high, but the detachable carry handle does not have a great return to zero nor is it's mounting as sturdy as the LaRue mounts.

Thow the carry handle in your pack (or better yet the LaRue fixed BUIS) and put the ACOG with LaRue mount on the rifle.  Depending on the eye relief of the scope you select you could mount a folding BUIS behind the ACOG for 'just in case' capability.

If I was stuck in CA., I would be shooting a single stack NightHawk 1911 or two, Remington 870's and M1A rifles.

If I wasn't stuck in CA., I would be shooting a single stack NightHawk 1911 or two, Remington 870's and M1A rifles.

I only have one NightHawk .45 1911, so I will have to back it up with my Les Baer.

F the bullet button and start shooting .308!!!

I bought a set of four consecutive serial numbered lowers for my kids.  My older son is 11 and I sat down with him this past weekend and pulled out the lower parts kit and we assembled his lower together.  For now he will be borrowing one of my uppers but he is old enough to hunt so he is old enough for his own AR in my book.  Of course, I keep the guns locked up in my big toy box anyways...

I'll have to tell him how lucky he is to even have it

Be sure to click on the hyperlink to the civilian marksmanship training. They have great training, the service rifle competition will hone your marksmanship ability, you will be able to hit man sized target to 600 yards with iron sights.

Also check out the CMP sales of M1 Garand service rifles and milsurp .30 caliber ball ammunition.

Go buy an sks, use that until you get something worthwhile built. Its what I did, and the zeds still have not gotten me.

That being said, now the sks is a hand off weapon to one of my zombie survival team when the time comes. Great rifle, but simple for people who are not as used to the ins and outs of semi autos.

AK47s are CA legal as well and can be had for around 400.  Also, I am pretty sure they can take some punishment as well...

And a $3000 into a car is not much in the grand scheme of cars. $3000 into a rifle build is a lot for a rifle when you don't have one and could probably do with something a lot simpler and spend the rest on training and ammo so you can learn to shoot it.

Yeah, get an SKS!

The SKS is my Cali go-to rifle.  It's a battle proven rifle that is Cali legal even with a bayonet. Just make sure to get a Chicom, and
not the Yugo with the grenade launcher.

You get a 10 round fixed box magazine that loads fast with 10 round stripper clips, a bayonet, and 7.62x39 ammo that is relatively
cheap to shoot and hits harder than 5.56.

Not to mention, you can get an SKS for much cheaper.

I actually already have a STAG Model 7 and a Ruger 10/22. I have been going to shoot at least once a month for a year now. Also I have enough money in my monthly budget to do it. My money, my choices.
