I think I know what you'll say, but I'll put it up for discussion anyways.
Scenario: emp/downed grid. Electronics are shot, gas is exhausted, society is collapsing because goods aren't moving. You and your family retreat from population centers to rural country. (This is most people's plan right?). Nearest town has a couple thousand people and lots of farmland. Do you: A) Hideout in your bugout location while society collapses, keeping a low profile as people die off and the chaos calms down. Emerge when your supplies are exhausted or order is restored. B) operate from bugout location, but engage the local township. Help work the farms, chop firewood, serve in militia, offer whatever skills you possess, etc; in an attempt to prevent a complete local societal collapse. Poll incoming |

i already live in that area, with a town of 2000 nearby. ill take in a few decent HELPFUL people and provide them a safe place to live and feed them in exchange for hard work. dont work, dont eat. This is what I would do. A small group will have difficulty dealing with a large group it doesn't matter if they are organized or if they are just a mob. The greater the number you have on your side the better your odds are of coming out on top. |

My plan is to go low-profile with my group and avoid outside contact for 3-4 weeks. After that, we poke our heads out, look around, and head downtown to see if there's functional city government and if they've heard from the rest of the state/nation.
Based on what I hear there, I take control of some abandoned government properties nearby and start farming. Which reminds me, I need to gather soil samples to send to the DNR. |
| A...I currently live outside of a small town (~6000 people) with a decent piece of property but my wife's family owns ~1700 acres (1200 or so farmland the rest woods with a large river running through it) about 20 minutes away, I'd round up everything of use, a few people I trust and know will pull their weight and head there and hunker down for however long is needed. Its where we spend our weekends anyway. |
|
You have to have societal trust. It is one of the things that is tearing us apart, we are devolving into a familial/tribal trust type of place and it is absolutely toxic for recovery and continuation. If I am not willing to help my neighbor, why would he help me when I am in crisis? Are there some who will take advantage of it, yes? They have to be dealt with harshly and fairly. But if everyone retreats, what could be a minor blip ends up wiping out civilization. If you are going to a rural area and you are just a weekender, how long do you think you will last if you aren't willing to pitch in? |

| Yea, this is about what I figured. I'd like to think that small communities could survive together, using larger numbers as good protection against threats, but the reality is that populations are unstustainably large. Even with everyone working the fields to put food on the table, you'd have massive shortages and food riots. Better to stay low until the population gets to be more manageable, then get involved if it suits you. |
|
Fuck it. Who wants to live forever? I'll go out and hunt "apex predators" for sport. |

WHen people in town went to the movies, I bought 9mm slugs. When people in town bought beer to party this weekend, I sealed rice in mylar. They chose. I chose "A" Dam dude you need to loosen up. Nothing wrong with having some preps but you sound like you've cut yourself off from society already. |
|
So I'm gonna go out and help the sons-a-bitches who blew off the personal responsibility of being prepared, voted demoncraptic, lived of the fruits of my labor and tried to legislate away my means of protecting my family? Hardly. Fuck 'em. Let 'em kill each other off...and I'll go out and pick up the pieces. Fortune favors the prepared. ![]() |
| I reject your reality and substitute my own, because the C option is that in the given scenario my initial plan would not be to fade the hot scene in the first place. My plan would be to follow my orders, which tell me where to deploy immediately and what to do. The military would be the last functional organization in any event. And should that fail, I think I would still rather take my orders from Marshal Koivuniemi than barter with some hicks. |

I know other like minded people, i consider them society... not much use for anything else. |
